BURLINGTON, N.C. – Powered by home runs from Brock Jones and Carter Trice, the Stripes claimed a 7-4 victory over the Stars on Saturday evening at Burlington Athletic Stadium in Burlington, N.C.
Drew Gilbert (Tennessee) and Ethan Long (Arizona State) each went 2-for-4 at the plate and combined to score three runs from the top of the Stripes lineup while Dylan Crews (LSU) had a pair of singles as the Stars’ leadoff hitter.
Picking up the win on the mound was Stripes starter Gabriel Hughes (Gonzaga) who yielded three runs on four hits in three innings of work. Jack Washburn followed with three shutout frames before Jaxon Wiggins (Arkansas) fanned two in the seventh to close out the win.
KEY MOMENTS
Jones (Stanford) wasted little time getting his team on the scoreboard, crushing a three-run opposite field longball in the bottom of the first.
Trice (Old Dominion) followed with a no-doubter of his own the following inning to put the Stripes up 4-0 early.
After dropping the series opener Friday night, the Stars were determined to fight back, however, with Jacob Berry (Arizona) answering right back with a three-run shot in the third to make it a 4-3 game.
Kevin Parada (Georgia Tech) dashed those comeback thoughts though, roping a two-run double to left-center in the fifth.
Long tacked on one more run for the Stripes with a double in the sixth and a run-scoring groundout by Robert Moore (Arkansas) in the seventh rounded out the tally on the scoreboard.
ON DECK
The Stars and Stripes will return to the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., for a 1:30 p.m. ET contest on Sunday, July 4,
