(OLD WESTBURY, N.Y., August 20, 2020) – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the costs associated with it, New York Institute of Technology will suspend all of its NCAA Division II athletics programs for at least two years.
“We have a rich legacy in competitive sports and are proud of everything our student-athletes have accomplished over the years. We thank everyone involved in our athletics program for their spirit, dedication, and professionalism,” said Henry C. “Hank” Foley, Ph.D., President of New York Tech. “For the next two years, unfortunately, we will no longer be competing with our peers in the East Coast Conference (ECC) and NCAA Division II.”
Foley added that all athletic scholarships will be honored for New York Tech students so that they can continue with their academic programs and graduate on schedule. Currently, close to 250 student-athletes are enrolled at New York Tech.
Going forward, the university will continue to focus on student health and wellness initiatives and on enhancing academics and the student experience with additional club and intramural sports that will be accessible to the broadest range of students possible. The CyBears esports club team, founded in 2017, is an example of team activities that will be developed further.
At a future date, New York Tech will re-evaluate the decision to suspend its participation in NCAA competition.
