FROM PRESS RELEASE
BIRMINGHAM —UAB interim head coach Perry Roth announced the hiring of Daniel Furuto as assistant coach.

“We are fortunate to have this opportunity to add Daniel Furuto to our coaching staff. I have known Daniel since he was a player at Briarwood HS and have been able to watch his climb through the coaching ranks,” said Roth. “He is first an unbelievable person with high character. He is a relentless worker, teacher, and recruiter. Daniel is highly respected within baseball circles and on the recruiting trail.”

In his career, Furuto coached all across the south from Texas to North Carolina while recruiting student-athletes from all across the country. He has coached 22 All-Conference players including five All-Americans. He has also seen 21 of his former players become MLB draft picks with five making it to the Major Leagues.
Furuto comes to UAB most recently from Georgia State where he served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2020 season. In the shortened season, the Panthers showed great promise as they finished with a winning record.

Prior to his stop with the Panthers, Furuto was a volunteer assistant coach at Abilene Christian University. In his lone season, the program recorded its highest wins total at the Division I level and set 13 school records.

Futuro spent four seasons (2015-18) as a coach for his alma mater University of Montevallo. He was elevated to associate head coach in his final two seasons on staff. During his time, he coached the team to a No. 20 final national ranking in 2018 and qualified for the postseason in the South Regional. In the 2016 and 2017 seasons, the Falcons finished in the top 15 in Division II in scoring and home runs.

He also made coaching stops at Union College (2013-14) and Campbell University (2011-12). While at Campbell, he was part of the Camels team that posted a 41-18, record the NCAA’s biggest turnaround in wins from the previous season.

Furuto also spent time coaching in the collegiate summer ranks for the Lima (Ohio) Locos of the Great Lakes League during the summers of 2009, 2010, and 2012. While in Lima, he coached several former Blazers during that stretch.

As a four-year starter for the University of Montevallo and two-time All-Gulf South honoree, he finished ranking amongst the school’s all-time leaders in several offensive categories.

In 2006, Furuto led the Falcons to the NCAA Division II College World Series semifinal and a No. 3 national ranking. He was also named South Central Regional Championship’s Most Valuable Player that same year.

Furuto earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics with a minor in kinesiology from University of Montevallo in 2008. He added a master’s in educational leadership from Union College in 2014. His brother Matthew played for the Blazers from 2013-15.
