ORONO – Head Coach Nick Derba of Maine Baseball announced the hiring of Ryan McClaran as the program’s new volunteer assistant coach on Tuesday morning.
McClaran makes the move to Orono following a season at El Paso Community College as the Assistant Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, where he primarily handled the team’s pitching staff and training regimen in one of the most competitive Junior College conferences in the nation. Prior to that, McClaran has made stops in the Expedition League, at Murray State College, Missouri Baptist University, and the Saint Louis Metro Collegiate Baseball League, among others. Before beginning his coaching career, McClaran served in the United States Army for two years.
“(McClaran) is an excellent addition to the staff. He possesses a wide range of skills that will certainly complement the program,” Derba stated. “Aside from his ability to teach multiple positions, “Mack” is bringing a set of leadership skills from one of, if not the most, respected organization in the world, the United States Army. He will be able to help relate to players at a different level because of his non-baseball experience, which will help the staff create a stronger learning environment for our team. “
On the diamond, McClaran has a litany of accomplishments including being named team captain at Odessa College in his freshman season, a trip to the NAIA College World Series with Missouri Baptist University, and a selection to the 17-and-under Team USA roster.
“I’m thrilled to join a program with such a rich history and bright future,” McClaran said. “My hope is to help this well-rounded coaching staff and talented roster in any way I can.”
McClaran joins Derba’s staff alongside current assistant coaches Josh Kieffer and Scott Heath.
