College Baseball Returns With First NCBL Games In Newport, Rhode Island

Baseball was back locally Friday with the first two games of the Newport Collegiate Baseball League season.

The newly-formed four-team league providing local college players the chance to get onto the field this summer at Cardines Field.

GNCBL loaded with local players this summer

The small details of being able to play baseball aren’t lost on Gavin Arsenault.

“The ability to put the cleats on is one of the best feelings in the world,” he said.

It’s a feeling the University of Maine at Farmington baseball player didn’t get to experience due to his senior season being canceled because of the coronavirus before games even began.

Luckily for Arsenault and more than 100 other players, the majority of which have Maine ties, the Greater Northeast Collegiate Baseball League found a way to proceed with its fourth season of existence this summer.

UConn’s Zach Bushling finds success in attack mode at UConn

Zach Bushling had a fairly simple approach to hitting in his first season of Division I baseball.

“If a pitch was there, just smack it,” said Bushling, who hit leadoff at the University of Connecticut in 2020. “I wasn’t trying to get deep in the count. I figured I’d just attack the best pitch I could find in the early count.”

That attack-based mentality helped Bushling become one of the most decorated athletes in the history of Kern Valley High School, where he set 11 school records as a member of the baseball, football and basketball teams.

It also produced a solid run in junior college baseball. In two years at Sierra College, Bushling hit .307 and earned California All-American honors in 2019.
