I can’t help but talk about Stephen Strasburg and that amazing World Series performance when we talk about San Diego State baseball.
But 92 on our CBD Top 100 Countdown has a long way to go to fill those shoes.
Casey Schmitt is a two-player for San Diego State who turned some heads in the Cape this past summer when he hit .248 in 129 at-bats with 5 home runs, while also posting a 2.45 ERA in 22 innings pitched with 26 strikeouts and 3 saves.
As a freshman he hit .264 with just 1 home run and a .302 OBP in 182 at-bats. However, he was very good on the mound as a freshman with a 0.28 ERA in 32 innings with 24 strikeouts and 9 saves.
This past season his ERA spiked a good bit to 3.77 in 43 innings with 44 strikeouts and 8 saves. But he was much better as a hitter in his sophomore season with a .315/.415/.450 slashline to go along with 42 runs, 5 home runs, and 36 RBI.
I’m not sure what SDSU plans to do with him in 2019, but he has a chance to be one of the best two-way players in college baseball as a closer and third baseman.
