CLARKSVILLE – Austin Peay State University baseball head coach Travis Janssen rounded out his 2019-20 coaching staff, adding Elliott McCummings as a volunteer assistant.

McCummings joins the Governors’ staff after spending the 2019 season as the volunteer assistant at Radford University, helping with the outfielders and as camp coordinator. The Highlanders posted a 30-27 record last season, including a 19-8 mark in Big South play.

While with the Governors, McCummings will work with outfielders and hitters and will assist with base running. He also will serve as coordinator of the Travis Janssen Baseball Camps.

“We’re very pleased to add Elliott to our program,” said Janssen. “What separated Elliott from the candidate pool is his combination of his personality, knowledge of the game, and ability to coach. He has a steady demeanor that our players will really enjoy learning from. Elliott brings Division I coaching experience and he also has familiarity with the OVC after having great success as a player in the league, which are big plusses.”

A Gloucester, New Jersey native, McCummings name will be familiar to Governors fans as he was an outfielder at Jacksonville State during the 2015-16 seasons. He was a career .320 hitter in two seasons with the Gamecocks, recording eight home runs and 75 RBI in 110 career games. McCummings graduated from Jacksonville State in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.

A junior college transfer for the Gamecocks, McCummings first played at Potomac State College in West Virginia. He was an NJCAA Second Team All-American as a freshman in 2014 after batting .394 (76-193) with 50 runs scored and 57 RBI – leading the Catamounts to a Region XX Championship and 40-15 overall record. McCummings finished his junior college career as the Potomac State career hits leader (143) and among the program’s Top 10 in runs scored (101) and RBI (94).

Following his playing career, McCummings began his coaching career in 2018 as an assistant at Louisburg College, a two-year college in North Carolina, where he worked with the team’s outfielders. There he helped the Hurricanes post a 31-22 record and an 11-11 record in Region XX.
