Toledo, Ohio— Tommy Winterstein has been hired as an assistant coach for the University of Toledo baseball team, head coach Rob Reinstetle announced on Tuesday. He will serve as the Rockets’ pitching coach. Winterstein most recently served as a volunteer assistant coach at Western Kentucky.
“I am very excited that Tommy Winterstein will be joining our staff,” Reinstetle said. “Tommy and I were together at Western Kentucky for a number of years. He has proven to be a loyal and dedicated coach. He will head up our pitching staff and bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our program. I’m very happy for Tommy to have this opportunity.”
Winterstein spent three seasons at WKU as the program’s volunteer assistant coach and camp director. As a Hilltopper, he assisted the coaching staff, primarily working with pitchers and catchers, while also coordinating alumni relations, community service initiatives, camps and clinics.
“I am honored to join the University of Toledo Baseball program and thankful for the opportunity that Coach Reinstetle and the entire administration are providing me,” Winterstein said. “I’m eager to get to work to help our student-athletes in pursuit of their goals, both on and off the field.”
Prior to his stint at WKU, Winterstein served as the director of player development at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, a member of the Big South Conference. At Charleston Southern, he worked mainly with hitters and infielders; provided video analysis to the coaching staff and hitters; served as High School Prospect Camp Director; assisted with recruits while they were on campus; assisted with annual golf tournament fundraiser as well as other program fundraising projects; participated in student-athlete success sessions, and oversaw game-day field preparations.
Winterstein began his collegiate playing career at Furman before transferring to the University of South Carolina-Lancaster in 2014. In his one season with the Lancers, he recorded an ERA of 2.18 across 10 appearances and hit .398 with 23 RBIs. Winterstein then transferred to Charleston Southern, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2016.
