PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State head coach Brian Green announced his coaching staff Thursday. Green was introduced as the Cougars 17th head coach in program history last Wednesday after spending the previous five seasons as the head coach at New Mexico State.
Green has added three of his assistants from NMSU where they helped the Aggies to a 2018 NCAA Regional appearance after winning the Western Athletic Conference Tournament before claiming the WAC Regular-Season Title this past season. Terry Davis will serve as the Cougars recruiting coordinator, Anthony Claggett will be the pitching coach and Trevor Hairgrove will work as the Cougars Director of Operations.
Green is expected to name volunteer assistant coach in the coming weeks.
“I believe in loyalty and trust. It’s the foundation of any relationship and it’s one of the core characteristics in the recruiting process that we sell in program vision is family. TD (Coach Davis) and his wife Natalie, Clags (Coach Claggett) and his finance Ashley and Trev (Coach Hairgrove), his wife Makenna and children Magnus and Tabitha are absolutely a part of the Green and now Cougar Family!” Green said. “We are so excited to bring them to Pullman. Cougar players will love their energy, their passion and their commitment to the program.”
Davis served as the Aggies recruiting coordinator the past two seasons and assisted with NMSU hitters and defense the past three seasons. Davis helped the New Mexico State finish among the regular season leading the country in batting average, runs, runs-per-game, hits, triples, on-base percentage, slugging and hit-by-pitch in addition to finishing in the Top-10 in home runs and walks.
Prior to NMSU, Davis was the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Bellarmine University (2014-16) in Kentucky where he helped the Knights to a pair of Great Lakes Valley Tournament berths, coaches six first-team All-GLVC selections including a Player of the Year (Austin Crutcher). Davis also coaches 10 seasons at St. Catharine College (2004-13) as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator where he helped produce 28 All-Mid-South Conference selections and 10 players who went on to play professional baseball.
“Terry is a passionate recruiter who will establish relationships around the northwest immediately,” Green added. “He brought in a nationally ranked class in Las Cruces, N.M. and I’m pumped to arm him with recruiting resources in Pullman.”
Claggett served as NMSU’s pitching coach the past two seasons where he coached a pair of draft picks on the mound including a sixth-round selection in 2018. Claggett has also seen three pitchers earn All-Western Athletic Conference honors including 2018 WAC Pitcher of the Year Jonathan Groff. In 2019, all three weekend starters recorded at least eight wins, while the 2018 pitching staff set the program record with 537 strikeouts and saw a pair of arms set the NMSU record with 11 wins and 12 saves.
Prior to New Mexico State, Claggett worked the 2017 season as the volunteer assistant coach at San Jose State and helped in the development of a pair of Spartan pitchers were drafted. Claggett worked the 2016 as the pitching coach and assistant recruiting coordinator at Riverside Community College where the Tigers posted a 2.83 team ERA. Claggett also coached one season in the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball League and another at the College of the Desert in Palm Springs, Calif. Claggett pitched collegiately at UC Riverside where he was an 11th-round draft pick by the Detroit Tigers, made his major league debut and pitched for the 2009 World Series Champion New York Yankees and later pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“Anthony joining the NMSU staff was a major piece in the program’s first WAC Tournament Championship and regional team in 2018. He’s passionate, he’s detailed, he has a World Series ring with the Yankees and he loves to teach,” Green said. “Our players will love working with him daily as he will be demanding and provide great relationship with the kids”
Hairgrove spent the 2019 season as the Aggies volunteer assistant coach where he helped with the offense and defense. Hairgrove worked the previous three seasons (2014-16) at his alma mater UC Riverside including the final season as the team’s director of baseball operations, overseeing the team’s travel while assisting with the scouting reports. Hairgove played collegiately at UC Riverside where he was an All-Big West first-team and All-West Region shortstop in 2011 before being selected in the 18th round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
