PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 28, 2019) – Rutgers University Director of Athletics Pat Hobbs today announced that the contract of head baseball coach Joe Litterio will not be renewed. Litterio served as head coach since 2014, guiding the program through its Big Ten Conference integration and directing the Scarlet Knights to a 140-173-1 overall record, including a 39-78 mark in Big Ten play.
“Joe has led the program with class and character, and served as a positive mentor to our student-athletes,” said Hobbs. “We are grateful for his contributions and proud to have had an alum shepherd the team through its Big Ten transition. Moving forward, we are committed to hiring a head coach who will enhance the trajectory of the program, while also adhering to the strong values that exemplify Rutgers Baseball.”
Litterio took over for the legendary Fred Hill in 2014 after spending the prior two seasons on staff as an assistant coach. Overall, he has served 18 years as a head coach at the collegiate level, including 12 seasons (2000-11) at Wagner. Litterio began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant under Hill in 1994 after competing as an infielder from 1990-93 on teams that won four Atlantic 10 Conference regular season titles and earned three NCAA Regional berths.
Phil Cundari, who spent the past two seasons as the Scarlet Knights’ pitching coach and earned a master’s degree from Rutgers in 1990, has been appointed interim head coach.
A national search will begin immediately.
