College Baseball Daily Top 40 Power Rankings: Week 2

Not many changes at the top after week two, but there were several series that helped teams gain some separation. Two weeks into the season and the field is wide open. Just about anyone could go to Omaha at this point.

  1. UCLA (6-1): I’m keeping UCLA at the top because they traveled to the east coast and won a series against a good Georgia Tech team. I watched most of this series and their pitchers won’t overpower you, but they know how to get batters out.

  2. Vanderbilt (5-1): Vanderbilt had to wait until Sunday to play a game with severe weather affecting the schedule. They ended up with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday.

  3. LSU (7-0): LSU continues to have some scares against lesser competition with a narrow win over a solid Bryant team on Sunday. But this team keeps finding ways to win, and that experience will be crucial come postseason time.

  4. Texas Tech (5-1): I know Kentucky is not as good as they have been in the past, but their sweep over the Wildcats at home this past weekend was quite impressive. They’ll get another test against the SEC this weekend with one game against Mississippi State in the Frisco College Baseball Classic.

  5. North Carolina (7-0): The Tarheels had one of the more impressive weekends out of the top five teams with a sweep over USF. It wasn’t easy with two one-run wins, including a walk-off win on Saturday.

  6. Oregon State (8-0): I really considered putting Oregon State at one because while all of the teams in front of them have tons of talent and experience, they all have holes. So far, Oregon State has been flawless.

  7. Arkansas (5-1): The Razorbacks had a good weekend on the Westcoast picking up two wins over USC. They just missed out on the sweep losing on a walk-off home run in the 10th on Saturday. Closer Matt Cronin had been used in the first two games and wasn’t available for the third.

  8. Louisville (5-2): Louisville got on track a little bit this past weekend with a sweep of Brown. It still wasn’t pretty as they went to extras to beat them in game two on Friday.

  9. Baylor (6-0): Baylor continues to beat up on inferior competition. We’ll finally see just how good they are this week with matchups against DBU and Texas A&M.

  10. Florida (5-3): It was not a great week for the Gators with losses to USF, North Florida, and Miami. The offense has been awful, but they showed signs of breaking out in the final two games against Miami.

  11. Florida State (7-0): The Seminoles haven’t played anyone noteworthy yet. And to be honest, they don’t have a difficult weekend series until April 12 against Clemson. Expect them to rack up the wins early on.

  12. Georgia (6-0): Another team who really hasn’t been tested yet, but they continue to get the job done.

  13. Clemson (6-1): After a close game against VMI to start the series, the Tigers looked really good in the final two games getting the sweep.

  14. Mississippi State (5-1): After dropping game one at home to Southern Miss, the Bulldogs bounced back to win the final two, including a walk-off on Sunday in what was the best series of the weekend.

  15. Southern Miss (4-2): I’m not going to fault the Golden Eagles for dropping two at Duby Noble. That series with Mississippi State was very even.

  16. East Carolina (5-2): I was very high on East Carolina coming into the season, but the loss to Monmouth on Sunday is concerning.

  17. UConn (3-3): For those who aren’t aware, the College of Charleston is a really good baseball program. UConn found out this past weekend as they dropped a couple of games.

  18. Ole Miss (4-2): The offense for Ole Miss really broke out in the final two games against Tulane. And they needed it on Sunday to win the series.

  19. Georgia Tech (3-2): The weekend got off to a good start with a walk-off home run to beat UCLA in game one. But their offense was shut down in the final two games scoring just two runs.

  20. Auburn (6-2): The Tigers were without David Daniel this weekend at UCF but they still come home with a solid series win. They’ll need their offense to pick it up if they’re going to stay in the top 25.
