Another player that has sort of elevated himself based on potential is Kansas right-handed pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn.
If you just look at his numbers with the Jayhawks, you might not think he’s a top MLB prospect. But he has all of the tools to succeed at the next level, which is why the Tampa Bay Rays selected him in the 37th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
As a freshman he posted a 6.19 ERA in 52 innings pitched with 53 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.78.
That summer he took a step forward with a 2.40 ERA in the Cape Cod League over 15 innings pitched with 20 strikeouts.
Those strikeouts totals continued into the spring when he struck out 100 batters over 80 innings, but maybe ran into some tough luck with an ERA of 4.48 and a WHIP of 1.31.
This past summer he put himself on the national map again by pitching for the USA Collegiate National team.
At 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, Zeferjahn has a very projectable build at the next level. We’ll see if he can improve on his ERA total this year while keeping up his strong K/9 numbers.
