A highly ranked prospect as a high school player coming out of New York, George Kirby was taken in the 32nd round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the New York Mets.
The opportunity to pitch in his home state must have been hard to turn down, but he did just that and Elon has been the beneficiary.
As a freshman in 2017 he had a 4.84 ERA in 61 innings pitched with 55 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.37.
He put himself on the map as a sophomore by going 10-3 with a 2.89 ERA in 90 innings pitched (15 starts) with 96 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.27.
Kirby followed that up with a huge summer in the Cape where he posted a 1.38 ERA in 13 relief innings with an amazing 24 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.08.
Those strikeout numbers in the cape as a reliever are very impressive and give you reason to believe he could be a dominant closer at the next level.
But Elon will need him as a starter and we’ll see if he can keep up those strikeout totals during a huge junior season.
