KALAMAZOO , Mich. – The Western Michigan baseball team and head coach Billy Gernon have announced changes to the Broncos staff heading into the 2019 season.
The changes include the hiring of former player Will Nimke as the team’s pitching coach and the naming of Blaine McFerrin as the team’s Director of Operations.
Nimke returns to Kalamazoo after enjoying a successful four-year career as a member of the Bronco pitching staff. Nimke also spent 2016 as an undergraduate assistant on the programs first ever Mid-American Conference Tournament championship team.
In his career, Nimke made 53 appearances and 26 starts and statistically had his best season during his freshman campaign going 4-4 with a 3.74 ERA in 12 starts. In 2012, Nimke during conference play was dominant on the mound recording a record of 2-2 with a 2.78 ERA, the best in the WMU starting rotation.
Nimke also became the first freshman to throw a complete game since Ethan Hollingsworth in 2006 with a nine-inning effort in WMU’s 5-4 win at Notre Dame on April 11.
McFerrin will still be a part of the Bronco baseball program, taking the role of Director of Operations. McFerrin spent the last six seasons as WMU’s associate head coach overseeing the Bronco pitching staff.
