A two-way player, Oregon’s Kenyon Yovan has been outstanding on the mound through two seasons.
The Seattle Mariners drafted him as a pitcher in the 32nd round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
As a freshman with Oregon, he posted a 1.97 ERA in 32 innings pitched with 36 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.00.
That summer he pitched in the Northwoods League and had an ERA of 2.60 in 27.2 innings pitched with 23 strikeouts and a 1.47 WHIP.
As a sophomore he made 10 starts and had an ERA of 2.98 in 84.2 innings pitched with 98 strikeouts and a 1.16 WHIP.
His ERA makes it look like he had a terrible summer in the Cape Cod League, but the rest of his numbers are in line with his career totals. He had a WHIP of 1.26 in 15.1 innings pitched with 15 strikeouts.
Yovan also pitched for the USA Collegiate National team this past summer, racking up a lot of innings over the 2018 season.
I don’t mean to dismiss him as a hitter, but he’s hit just .132 and .233 respectively during his first two seasons at Oregon, and his summer league numbers aren’t much better.
The 6-foot-2, 220 pound junior certainly has a shot at the next level as a pitcher with dominant stuff.
