The New York Mets selected right-handed pitcher C.J. Van Eyk in the 19th round of the 2017 MLB Draft, but the 6-foot-2, 185-pound pitcher chose to play at Florida State instead.
As a freshman with the Seminoles, he pitched in 56.2 innings making 5 starts, while posting a 2.86 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 71 strikeouts.
This past summer he pitched for the USA Collegiate National team.
He has a very simple delivery that looks effortless, and features a two-seam fastball that runs away from left-handed hitters. His out-pitch is a big 12-6 curveball though.
Like a lot of young, talented pitchers, Eyk can struggle to find the zone at times. How quickly he can figure out how to command the plate will determine whether or not he earns a spot in Florida State’s weekend rotation as a sophomore.
