Baylor infielder Davis Wendzel enters his junior season after hitting over .300 in each of his first two seasons with the Bears.
The Boston Red Sox drafted him in the 37th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, but that wasn’t enough to pull him away from coming back to Baylor for at least another year.
As a freshman in 2017 he hit .301 in 153 at-bats with 34 runs scored, 8 home runs, 30 RBI, and a .428 on-base percentage.
That following summer he hit .316 in the West Coast League over just 38 at-bats.
His sophomore season he hit .310 with Baylor in 216 at-bats with 38 runs scored, 22 doubles, 8 home runs, 49 RBI, and a .435 on-base percentage.
That earned him an invite to the Cape Cod League where he hit .236 in 161 at-bats with 19 runs scored, 11 doubles, 3 home runs, 14 RBI, and a .346 on-base percentage.
At 6-foot and 185 pounds, he profiles more as a second baseman at the next level. But looking at his frame, I think he could bulk up a bit and be a power-hitting third baseman.
Coming off a subpar outing in the Cape, this will be a huge junior season for Wendzel to see if he can improve his draft stock.
