2.4K Erik Miller, a left-handed pitcher, is entering his junior season at Stanford but has yet to show us his true potential. As a freshman with the Trees in 2017 he posted a 3.65 ERA in 61.2 innings pitched with just 34 strikeouts and a WHIP of 1.35. He followed that up with a 3.93 ERA in 18.1 innings with 19 strikeouts and a 1.99 WHIP in the New England Collegiate League. Many thought he would breakout as a sophomore, but instead he threw just 48.2 innings in 13 starts with a 4.07 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. His strikeout numbers did improve with 52. Miller went to the Cape this past summer and things didn’t get much better there as he went 0-4 with a 7.71 ERA in 23.1 innings pitched with 32 strikeouts. The walks have always been a problem for Miller, but he was hit around pretty good this summer. It was nice to see his strikeout numbers improve from his freshman season, and I would expect that to continue. The key for Miller in 2019 will be control and consistency — something that always holds an impressive arm back. We know the tools are there for Miller to be a great pitcher, and we’re banking on him having a breakout year in 2019.
