SALT LAKE CITY – Utah baseball has released its 2019 schedule, head coach Bill Kinneberg announced on Wednesday, October 3.
The Utes have 24 home games at Smith’s Ballpark this season beginning with a three game series against Niagara on Friday, March 8.
“We begin the season with three tournaments at Texas State, San Diego and then at East Carolina, so those first three weeks will be challenging from the sense that we play 11 different teams in 11 games,” Kinneberg said. “Then having our home opener against Niagara in the beginning of March will be nice to play at home for us at that point.”
The season begins with a tournament in San Marcos, Texas on Friday, February 15 against Texas State. The Utes will finish the weekend by playing Missouri State on Saturday and Nevada on Sunday.
In all, Utah starts the year with 11 straight road games all over the country. After playing in San Marcos, they will play in San Diego, Las Vegas and then fly across the country to play a tournament at East Carolina in Greenville, North Carolina.
After facing Niagara at home March 8-10, Pac-12 play will start on Friday, March 15 at Arizona in Tucson. The Utes first two conference series will be on the road as they travel to Stanford the next weekend.
The Utes host Oregon at home the weekend of March 29, and then will welcome BYU to Smith’s Ballpark on April 2 for its first of three midweek games against the Cougars. The other two games against BYU are April 9 in Provo and then May 14 back at home.
After playing at BYU on April 9, the Utes begin a seven-game home stand as they host USC and Arizona State over the next two weekends with a midweek with Utah Valley sandwiched in the middle on April 16.
Utah only plays three home games in the first 21 games, but the Utes have eight home games in April and 10 home games in May. The Utes finish the season playing 10 of their final 13 games in the friendly confines of Smith’s Ballpark.
After finishing the Pac-12 regular season against Washington State, Utah will wrap up its regular season against UC Davis from May 23-25.
The team plays against eight NCAA Tournament teams in 2019 including two College World Series teams in Washington and defending National Champion Oregon State. Both of those series will be on the road.
Utah is practicing this fall and has two games and 12 intersquad scrimmages. The two games will be against Utah Valley in Smith’s Ballpark on Saturday, October 6 at 4:30 and then will travel to play Dixie State on Saturday, October 27.
“The fall has been good so far,” Kinneberg said. “It was great to get down to Smith’s Ballpark and play a couple days to get situated in the ball park. We’re looking forward to play UVU this weekend to get some competition against somebody else. The fall is progressing very well and we’re doing some good things.”
