NORTH ADAMS, Mass. – Valley outfielder Andre Marrero (Quinnipiac) and Mystic righty Christopher Troye (UC Santa Barbara) have been named the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their efforts on the diamond for Week 4 of the 2018 season.
Marrero boasted a pair of multi-hit performances – including two three-hit outings – during a week that saw him lead the league with 10 RBIs. He had a 3-for-4 showing with a run and a season-high five RBIs in a 12-5 win over Winnipesaukee on June 27. Following another 2-for-4 game with a double as part of an 8-3 win over Keene a day later, he added three more hits to his season total with another 3-for-5 evening in an important 6-4 win over Upper Valley on Saturday. That game featured a triple and three more RBIs, and he drove in one more run yesterday against North Adams.
On the summer, the rising junior at Quinnipiac is now batting over .300 with a 20-for-64 clip at the plate (.313). He has two homers, two doubles and a triple, as well as 18 RBIs. He has drawn 10 walks while striking out only 12 times in 64 at-bats while slashing .313/.385/.469 for an .854 OPS. He finished his sophomore season at Quinnipiac with 56 hits in 211 at-bats (.265) with 17 doubles and 20 RBIs.
Troye, who is listed as a position player, has come out of bullpen three times this summer, and it and was his most recent outing that turned heads and earned him his first weekly accolade for the Schooners. He entered Mystic’s June 29 game against New Bedford in relief and wound up going 5-1/3 innings with a stunning 12 strikeouts, just one walk and no hits yielded. His utter dominance saw him strike out 12 of the 17 batters he faced.
After that outing, Troye’s numbers on the season include a 1.08 ERA in 8-1/3 innings of relief work; he has fanned 19, walked just five and – more stunningly – has given up only one hit in that span. The rising sophomore at UC Santa Barbara logged over 15 innings in his rookie campaign with 24 strikeouts.
The NECBL congrats both players on their accomplishments.
Week 4 Honor Roll
Nick Gallagher (Danbury/Binghamton) – Had a tough-luck no decision in an otherwise brilliant start against Mystic, going 5-2/3 innings with only three hits allowed and no runs. More importantly was his dominance in the strike zone, as he fanned 11 with no walks yielded.
Thomas Girard (Mystic/Duke) – Was the only reliever with two saves last week in the NECBL after locking down a pair of Mystic wins. He struck out two of the three batters he faced in a one-run game for his first save, and then he two innings of scoreless relief with only a walk yielded in a 2-0 win over New Bedford for his second save. He fanned 6-of-7 in that second outing, as well.
Justin Lebek (Danbury/Davidson) – Had three multi-hit performances on the week, including a pair of three-hit games. He had eight hits in total and ranked second in the league with a .615 batting average (8-13) while scoring four runs.
Griff McGarry (Keene/Virginia) – Made two relief outings last week and wound up picking up the win in one of them, as he finished with 5-1/3 scoreless innings of work that included eight strikeouts, two walks and two hits. His second outing was particularly strong after he fanned six batters over four innings.
John Murphy (Sanford/Maryland) – Went 1-0 with a save in two appearances out of the bullpen last week to further his reputation as one of the league’s top relievers so far. He finished with six strikeouts, a walk and just one hit allowed over 3-1/3 innings.
Colton Parrish (Plymouth/TCU) – While he only appeared in three games last week, what he did in that limited sample size was truly impressive, mashing three home runs in nine at-bats while finishing with five hits overall. He scored four runs and drove in six more while finishing the week with a 2.192 OPS.
Joe Porricelli (North Adams/Merrimack) – Hit safely in all four games he played in last week, with three of those games featuring two or more hits while helping North Adams win all of those games. Batted .444 overall on the week with eight hits, four runs, seven RBIs, two doubles and a homer.
Jake Rockefeller (New Bedford/URI) – While his 4-2/3 worth of scoreless innings out of the bullpen resulted in a no decision, his team would ultimately go on to pick up a huge win over Mystic in his lone outing last week. He struck out seven with no hits and just a walk yielded during that appearance, as well.
Sebastiano Santorelli (Mystic/Seton Hall) – Pushed his hitting streak to seven games after recording at least one hit in all six games he played in last week. Led the league with 10 hits in that span while batting .435 with five runs scored and four RBIs.
Jack Winkler (New Bedford/San Francisco) – Now is riding a 17-game hitting streak after recording at least one hit in all six games he played in last week. Finished the week with eight hits overall (.364 batting average) with a league-high eight runs scored plus a home run and six RBIs.
