College Baseball Daily continues out Top 100 Player countdown for the upcoming 2018 season. Checking in at number 96 in the countdown is USC-Upstate senior right-handed pitcher Blake Whitney.
Whitney has been up and down throughout his collegiate career starting off as a freshman going 3-4 with a 5.48 ERA in 16 appearances including seven starts. He struggled with walks as he allowed 35 while striking out 42.
His sophomore season in 2016 saw him go 0-4 with a 5.93 ERA in 14 appearances including 11 starts. He had a total of 54.1 innings pitched while cutting back on walks with only 21 while striking out 46. Blake spent the summer in the Valley Baseball League going 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA.
Whitney was again average in 2017 going 5-6 with a 5.50 ERA in 21 appearances including 13 starts. He improved again with his strikeout total with 82 strikeouts in while walking 29. He spent the summer in the NECBL where he was named an All-Star going 1-3 with a 2.07 ERA in nine starts. He dominated hitters with 80 strikeouts in 52 innings. During the NECBL All-Star Game, Whitney pitched a perfect inning striking out two batters.
