WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf has announced the addition of Chris Moore to the Seahawk coaching staff as a volunteer assistant for the 2017-18 season.
“I’ve known Chris for a long time and am eager to have him join our staff,” said UNCW Head Coach Mark Scalf, who will enter his 27th season as Seahawk skipper in 2018. “He’s a tireless worker with a tremendous amount of experience. He’s a great fit for our program.”
Moore, who graduated from New Hanover High School in 1995, comes to the Seahawks after serving on coaching staffs at various levels, including three seasons as head coach at Lander University. He most recently served as an assistant at Georgia Southern from 2013 through 2015. Prior to that, he was the recruiting coordinator at Appalachian State as the Mountaineers moved into the highly competitive Sun Belt Conference.
Following his prep career, Moore attended and graduated from Western Carolina where he was a two-time All-America and four-time All-Southern Conference selection. In 1999, he was named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year while setting program records for hits, doubles and runs batted in.
Moore was drafted in the 11th round by the Colorado Rockies in 1999 and played four seasons in the Rockies’ organization before joining the coaching ranks.
His first stop was Davidson in 2003 and in 2006 he was named an assistant at Lander in Greenwood, S.C. Following one season as an assistant, he was elevated to head coach for the next three, leading the Bearcats to a top-20 national rankings his final season.
Moore coached one season at West Georgia before joining the coaching staff at Appalachian State. At ASU, Moore helped the Mountaineers to a school-record 41 wins in 2011 and their first SoCon Championship since 1987 and their first NCAA Regional appearance since 1986.
Moore and his wife, Aimee, reside in Wilmington with their children, Carter (15) and Lillee (11).
