Staten Island, NY – The 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball Championship will be held at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, NY from May 23-28 as announced by MAAC commissioner Richard J. Ensor at the stadium earlier this morning.
Representing the Manhattan Jaspers at the announcement was rising senior Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)). Bisset was eighth in the MAAC a year ago with a team-leading .335 average while posting 17 multi-hit games.
“It is great to have the MAAC Tournament come to New York City,” said Bisset. “I am excited that my teammates and I will have the opportunity to compete for the MAAC Title at such a fantastic venue next year.”
Richmond County Bank Ballpark will continue to host the event through 2020.
“The MAAC membership is excited about the opportunity to partner with the Staten Island Yankees, and have its baseball championship played at Richmond County Bank Ballpark,” notes Ensor. “The site will be a terrific experience for the MAAC’s student-athletes, their fans, and families. We look forward to enhancing the brand awareness of MAAC Baseball in the tri-state region with this new partnership.”
Richmond County Bank Ballpark has been the home of the six-time New York-Penn League Champion Staten Island Yankees, the short season-A level minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees, since 2001. The stadium seats roughly 7,000 fans and has been the host to concerts, food festivals, and other ancillary events, overlooks lower Manhattan and is considered one of the best views in all of Minor League Baseball.
“The Staten Island Yankees and Richmond County Bank Ballpark are excited to host more championship baseball in St. George. Hosting more baseball at our ballpark while introducing MAAC fans to the Island and the local developments is a win-win. We look forward crowning a new MAAC baseball champion and creating life-long memories right here on Staten Island in 2018 and beyond,” said Will Smith, Staten Island Yankees President/Operating Partner.
The MAAC hand a banner year last season as 12 student-athletes inked contracts with Major League teams at the conclusion of the season, fueled by 11 selections in the annual Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. Junior LHP Tom Cosgrove was the second-highest drafted played from the MAAC after being selected in the 12th round in the draft before senior Jose Carrera entered the professional ranks as undrafted free agent last month.
