CARY, N.C. – Travis Swaggerty and Steele Walker each tallied two hits and a RBI, while Sean Wymer threw 4.0 shutout innings as the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team secured the series win over Chinese Taipei on Thursday with a 3-1 victory in game three of the 17th USA vs. Chinese Taipei Friendship Series. The U.S. now holds a 3-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
Team USA jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning as Swaggerty led off the frame with a triple to center field and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of Walker.
The United States pushed its lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning when Swaggerty drove in pinch-runner Jake McCarthy with a line drive to center field, followed by Cadyn Grenier scoring from third base on a throwing error by the catcher.
Starting pitcher Wymer earned the win throwing 4.0 scoreless innings in his first start of the summer, scatterting two hits with one strikeout. Ryley Gilliam collected his second save of the series after tossing a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
The U.S. team ended the game with three runs on six hits with one error, while Chinese Taipei finished with one run on five hits with two errors.
The United States and Chinese Taipei will play game four of the 17th USA vs. Chinese Taipei International Friendship Series on Friday with first pitch moved up to 12:05 p.m. due to inclement weather predicted in the area. Batting practice is scheduled for 10 a.m. from the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
The series is sanctioned by the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
