San Diego State 3 UCLA 2 (13 Innings)
LONG BEACH, Calif. – San Diego State kept Its Regional hopes alive as it defeated UCLA, 3-2, in 13 innings Saturday afternoon at Blair Field in Long Beach, Calif. SDSU’s winning run came in the top of the 13th when Danny Sheehan was hit by pitch with the bases loaded.
With the victory, the Aztecs improved to 42-20 on the year. The loss eliminated the Bruins from the tournament as they finish their 2017 season with a record of 30-27.
SDSU got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Singles by Andrew Brown and Andrew Martinez plus Jordan Verdon being hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out. Dean Nevarez then hit a sharp grounder that hit UCLA pitcher Jon Olsen on the leg and rolled between first and second for a hit to bring home Brown with the opening run. Tyler Adkison then hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Martinez to make it a 2-0 contest.
Game 4: Texas 5 Long Beach State 3 (12 innings)
LONG BEACH, Calif.—Second-seeded Texas Baseball (39-22) used eight innings from Morgan Cooper, three solo homers and a clutch 12th-inning two-run single from Travis Jones to defeat top-seeded Long Beach State, 5-3, on Saturday night at Blair Field. With the win over the Dirtbags (38-18-1) in the matchup of 1-0 teams, the Longhorns advance to the Long Beach Regional final on Sunday.
The game proved to be another pitchers’ duel in Long Beach as both Cooper and LBSU’s Darren McCaughan were both named Collegiate Baseball All-Americans earlier this week.
The Dirtbags got on the board first off Cooper when they manufactured a run on the base paths, but in the top of the second, Bret Boswell answered with his first of two homers in the game. The redshirt-junior unloaded on the 1-0 offering from McCaughan to knot the game at 1-1.
