Game 3: BYU 6 Sacramento State 1
STANFORD, California (June 2, 2017)—A career-high eight strikeouts by Hayden Rogers was just what No. 26 BYU baseball needed in a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State on Friday.
Junior Rogers (9-2) and senior tri-captain Tanner Chaunceylead the Cougars (38-20) to stay alive in the elimination bracket of the NCAA regional. It was the first win for BYU in a regional since it last appeared in 2002 with victories over Maine and Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles.
“Hayden Rogers gave us an incredible outing today,” BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. “I felt totally comfortable giving him the ball. We knew he was throwing well. We just needed to get a couple runners on and see if we could get a hit. Tanner (Chauncey) came up big today.”
Game 4: Cal-State Fullerton 4 Stanford 1
Palo Alto, Calif. – Junior John Gavin held the No. 8 national seed Cardinal to just three hits over 7 strong innings as Cal State Fullerton (36-21) upended Stanford (41-15) 4-1 Friday night to advance the Titans to the NCAA Stanford Regional Championship Game at Sunken Diamond.
Fullerton will play the winner of Saturday afternoon’s elimination game between BYU and Stanford in the nightcap at 6 p.m. It will be streamed on ESPN3.
Gavin (7-2) needed 112 pitches to work his way to his 7th win of the year, striking out 10 Cardinal along the way. He retired the last seven batters he faced and struck out the side in his final inning of work. He also used a pair of strikeouts to escape a 5th inning jam that saw the Cardinal score their only run.
