Game 3: UNC-Greensboro 3 St. John’s 1
CLEMSON, S.C. – UNCG knocked off the No. 23 St. John’s Red Storm, 3-1 in an elimination game in the NCAA Clemson Regional Saturday afternoon. The Spartans see their season continue and will play the loser of tonight’s Vanderbilt, Clemson game at 1 p.m. tomorrow afternoon. The Spartans improve to 36-23 on the season and have now won at least one game in the NCAA Tournament in all three appearances. St. John’s finishes the season 42-13.
“That was a well-pitched and a well-defended game.” Head coach Link Jarrett said, “When our team can get the kind of starting pitching like we got today, and we can defend like we did today, that’s our team. (St. John’s) Magee pitched a beautiful ball game and he got better as he went. Matt (Frisbee) matched him pitch for pitch. Frisbee’s fastball and slider early were big, and he worked the changeup in later. (Andrew) Wantz came in and did better later when he was able to get his fastball glove side.”
Game 4: Vanderbilt 9 Clemson 4
Clemson, S.C. — Vanderbilt used a pair of big innings and a strong start from Kyle Wright to advance to the Clemson NCAA Regional final with a 9-4 win over host Clemson Saturday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Commodores (35-22-1) broke up a scoreless game in the fourth inning when the first three batters all reached. Reed Hayes led off the inning with a double and moved to third on Ethan Paul’s single to shallow right field. With runners on the corners, Jason Delay made it 1-0 with a double down the right field line. A Harrison Ray sacrifice fly to deep center field made it a two-run Vandy lead. A two-out double from Will Toffey landed in the left-center field gap and capped the rally. The big two-out hit foreshadowed the Dores’ next big inning that blew the game open.
