BOSTON – Northeastern baseball head coach Mike Glavine proudly announced the Huskies’ 2017 schedule on Monday, revealing the dates and opponents NU will face along its journey to the CAA championship.
“I am excited to announce our 2017 season schedule and the 97th in program history,” Glavine said. “We have another challenging schedule this year, playing our first 18 games on the road before we open up at home [on March 21]. We continue to bring the program to new places and give our student-athletes unique challenges.”
Northeastern will begin its 2017 campaign with consecutive multi-game, road series at Southern Miss (Feb. 17-19) and North Florida (Feb. 24-26). Southern Miss is one of eight NCAA tournament teams on the Huskies’ slate this year, while North Florida won 39 games a season ago, two fewer than the Golden Eagles.
NU will sandwich its two opening series around its annual spring exhibition game against the Boston Red Sox, set for Thursday, Feb. 23, at the pro club’s spring training facility, Jet Blue Park.
From there, the Huskies will return to the state of Florida during spring break to play seven non-conference games at the 2017 Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte. Among Northeastern’s foes there, NU will face Western Michigan, the defending MAC champions, on March 10.
Continuing on, Northeastern will head to Hartford for its first New England game of 2017 on March 15, the Wednesday before heading to Cincinnati for a three-game, weekend set against AAC member, Cincinnati (March 17-19).
Glavine addressed the Huskies’ mindset while beginning the year with 18 straight games away from the Huskies’ home park, Friedman Diamond.
“We always look forward to early challenges on the road before we begin conference play. Playing on the road allows the team to strength its chemistry and face early adversity to prepare us for the CAA season. We know the conference will be strong again this year from top of bottom, but we look forward to that challenge.”
Northeastern will open its 2017 home schedule on Tuesday, March 21, with a 3 p.m. game against crosstown rival, Boston College.
Beginning its CAA season with two straight road series at Elon (March 24-26) and Towson (March 31-April 2), the Huskies will return home on Friday, April 7, to start a three-game league series against Delaware. NU will remain at home for each of the next three weekends of the season, hosting College of Charleston (April 14-16), NYIT (April 21-23), and Hofstra (April 28-30), before the calendar turns to May.
Northeastern will look to avenge its loss against Boston College during the 2016 Beanpot championship game on Wednesday, April 5, when the Huskies head to Chestnut Hill for the semifinals of the 2017 Beanpot tournament. NU will then play either Massachusetts or Harvard in the championship or consolation game, both scheduled for Wednesday, April 19.
The Huskies will wrap up their 2017 season at home against James Madison (May 18-20) and await qualification to the CAA tournament (top six teams advance), to be held from May 24 to May 27 at UNCW’s Brooks Field.
All tickets to home games at Friedman Diamond in Brookline, Massachusetts, are free. All times listed are Eastern and subject to change.
