WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team has released the schedule for the upcoming 2017 season. Highlighting the slate are 19 home games at Shirley Povich Field, as well as seven contests against teams that reached the 2016 NCAA Tournament.
The Hoyas open the season the weekend of Feb. 17-19 with the first of two trips to the state of North Carolina, traveling to Davidson for a three-game series against the Wildcats. Last February, Davidson took two of three games from GU during the second weekend of the season.
Georgetown will play the first of 12 midweek games on Wednesday, Feb. 22 when the Hoyas travel to Baltimore for a game against Coppin State. The Eagles will make the return trip to Shirley Povich Field a month later, on Wednesday March 22, to complete the home-and-home. The Blue & Gray will also play home-and-home midweek series against Navy (Feb. 28, Mar. 29), George Washington (Mar. 1, May 2), Maryland-Eastern Shore (Mar. 15, May 10) and UMBC (April 25, May 16). The Hoyas will also host Cornell, on Tuesday, April 4, and travel to Mount St. Mary’s on Thursday, April 18.
On the second weekend of the season, GU will travel to Spartanburg, S.C. for a trio of games, Feb. 24-26. The Hoyas play at USC Upstate on Friday before heading across the city to Wofford. Georgetown will take on the Terriers on Saturday before playing a neutral site game against Dayton on Sunday.
Georgetown embarks on its annual trip to Florida for spring break, playing eight games in 10 days at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla. The Hoyas open the trip against Chicago State on Friday, Mar. 3. They will then take on ACC-foe Boston College on Saturday, Mar. 4. Last season, the Eagles reached the regional final of the NCAA Tournament before falling to Miami (Fla.) in three games. The opening weekend of the Florida trip will wrap up with a matchup against Ball State on Sunday, Mar. 5.
Spring break continues after a day off when the Blue & Gray plays Central Michigan (Tuesday, Mar. 7) and Western Michigan (Wednesday, Mar. 8). Following another day off, GU will play a three-game series against Lafayette, Mar. 10-12, to close out the Florida trip.
The Hoyas then hit the road for the next two weekends after returning from Florida. The weekend of Mar. 17-10, the Hoyas will make their second trip to North Carolina for a three-game set at Gardner-Webb. Georgetown will travel north for a two-day, three-game series at Brown, Mar. 25-26. The two teams will play a doubleheader in Providence on Saturday before closing the weekend with a single game on Sunday.
On Friday, Mar. 31, Georgetown and George Mason will open a three-game series at Shirley Povich Field. The first game will be played at GU’s home field, while the final two games of the series, Saturday, April 1 and Sunday, April 2, will be played in Fairfax, Va.
The Blue & Gray plays its first home series the weekend of April 7-9, hosting NYI for a three-game series at Shirley Povich Field.
BIG EAST play will open the weekend of April 13-15 when Creighton visits Shirley Povich Field for three games. The series will take place Thursday-Saturday because of the Easter holiday. Last season, the Hoyas won on Sunday to take a game in Omaha, Neb., against the then-No. 23 Bluejays.
Georgetown will hit the road for back-to-back weekends, playing at Seton Hall, April 21-23, and at Villanova, April 28-30. Last spring, GU took two-of-three from the Pirates, including a 1-0 complete game shutout by Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple). The Wildcats took two games from the Hoyas on the final weekend of the 2016 season.
Following the series at Villanova, GU will open an eight-game homestand that will include three-game sets against St. John’s, May 5-7, and Butler, May 12-14. Last season, the Blue & Gray dropped two-of-three games to both teams in road series.
The final weekend of the season will see the Hoyas travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a trio of games, May 18-20, against the reigning BIG EAST regular season and tournament champions, Xavier. Georgetown opened conference play against the Musketeers last season, winning the series by taking the final two games. Xavier went on to win a pair of games in the NCAA Tournament.
The 2017 BIG EAST Championships will take place May 26-29 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb., the home of the College World Series.
Georgetown is coming off of a 2016 season where it finished with a 25-29 overall record and an 8-10 mark in BIG EAST play, finishing just one game out of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Hoyas reached the 25-win plateau for the second-straight season and third time in the past four years.
