SEATTLE – Lindsay Meggs has signed a three-year extension that will keep him as head baseball coach at Washington through at least June 2023, Director of Athletics Jennifer Cohen announced Friday.
Meggs has steadily built one of the nation’s premier programs since taking over at Washington on July 27, 2009. In his eight years at UW, he has compiled a 202-187-1 record.
“I’m grateful to Jen Cohen and the University of Washington for their ongoing support of our program,” Meggs said. “It’s exciting to know that our goal of creating an Omaha-type program is shared by everyone on this campus. The University of Washington is about greatness, and I take that responsibility very seriously. This is a great time to lead this program and I can’t wait to get back to work, back on the field, and back on the Road to Omaha.”
Over the last three years, Meggs has guided the Huskies to two NCAA Regionals and the second-best winning percentage overall among all Pac-12 teams. He was named 2014 Pac-12 Coach of the Year after leading the Huskies to 41 wins and a second-place finish in the Conference standings. He duplicated that Pac-12 finish in 2016 and had his team in contention for the league title until the very last day of the regular season.
“Coach Meggs has built our program into a Pac-12 contender, and shares our vision for building a championship culture here at Washington,” Cohen said. “I am thrilled to extend the term of his contract, and cannot wait to work closely with him to take the next steps toward further success.”
Ten players have earned All-Pac-12 recognition – including 2016 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and unanimous All-American Troy Rallings – under Meggs’ tutelage. He has also seen players earn All-Pac-12 Defensive honors seven times since the award’s inception in 2014, with Erik Forgione earning recognition as the 2014 Defensive Player of the Year.
Meggs has also consistently developed players that have succeeded in the professional ranks. He has had 25 of his players selected in the Major League Draft in his first seven years at UW. Fifteen players, including a school record eight in 2014, have been selected over the last three years.
While the Huskies are successful on the field, Meggs’ teams also excel in the classroom. Since 2010, the team’s grade point average has steadily climbed. They have consistently achieved above a 3.00 average each quarter, culminating with a program-best 3.14 GPA during Autumn of 2014.
Meggs has also played an instrumental role in the improvement of UW’s facilities. Since opening in 2014, Husky Ballpark has received praise as being one of the best facilities on the West Coast.
With a new ballpark and top talent coming to Washington, the future of Husky Baseball looks very bright. Meggs and his staff recruited the 15th best class of newcomers in 2015 according to Baseball America and achieved a program-best rating of ninth for 2016.
The 2016 season will be Meggs’ 24th overall as a head coach. He earned his 800th career win last year at Arizona State and has a career record of 817-494-5.
