NECBL_thumb.jpgNORTH ADAMS, Mass. – With only one full week remaining in the 2016 New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) season, Mystic infielder Nick Mascelli (Wagner) and Sanford right-handed pitcher Blaise Whitman (Rhode Island) have been named the league’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for their efforts on the diamond.

Mystic claims its first such major weekly award of the summer after Mascelli’s monster week at the plate helped the South Division-leading Schooners to 5-2 over the course of the week; Whitman, meanwhile, becomes Sanford’s second Pitcher of the Week and first since William Tribucher did so back in Week 1; the North Division-leading Mainers went a perfect 5-0 on the week to maintain a two-game lead atop the division.

Mascelli had at least a hit in all seven games last week and locked up the award with a 6-for-6, three-double, six-RBI outing in an 18-4 win against Keene on July 21. Overall, the rising senior at Wagner led the league with 18 hits in 29 at-bats last week, while his 11 runs and 11 RBIs also topped the league leader boards. He drew eight walks, did not strike out and posted three doubles, one triple and one home run while swiping three bases. His 1.60 OPS was also tops in the league among players with at least 20 plate appearances.

Overall, Mascelli has appeared in 36 games for the Schooners and ranks fourth in the league with a .363 batting average (49-135); he also has scored 33 runs with nine doubles and one triple and one home run while driving in 17 more. His OPS on the season stands at .943, as well.

Moving to the mound, Whitman was excellent out of the bullpen in two separate relief outings. The righty and rising senior at Rhode Island tossed six scoreless innings that featured five strikeouts, only one walk and two hits yielded en route to posting a 0.50 WHIP; he was the winning pitcher of record in the Mainers’ 3-0 victory over Winnipesaukee on July 19 when he fanned three with only one walk and two hits allowed over four scoreless innings, and four days later he threw two more perfect frames with two strikeouts.

For the summer, Whitman – who has worked exclusively out of the bullpen – has gone 4-1 with a 4.50 ERA over 15 appearances; in 24 innings, he has totaled 19 strikeouts compared to six walks while opponents have hit only .223 against him.

The NECBL congrats both players on their accomplishments.
