NECBLLogo.jpgNORTH ADAMS, Mass. – The first cycle in Mountaineers franchise history and rock-solid, eight-inning outing on the mound helped Vermont outfielder Troy Scocca (Fairfield) and Winnipesaukee right-hander Denis Lyman (Bridgeport) lay claim to the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Player and Pitcher of the Week honors, as announced by the league on Monday.

Scocca had a hit of every variety as part of a 4-for-4 performance in a Monday night home blowout victory against New Bedford as part of a six-hit week, while Lyman twirled an eight-inning, nine-strikeout gem on Friday night during his only start of the week. The honors are the first for either player and either franchise this summer, as both teams combined to go 7-2 over the past week.
A Syosset, New York, native, Scocca homered, for the second time this summer before doubling, tripling, and singling over the remainder of the night to round out one of the rarest feats in baseball. He finished the week with a .375 batting average, five runs and five RBIs. For the summer, the rising junior at Fairfield University is batting just over .280 in 18 games played with five doubles, two triples, two homers and 16 RBIs.
Coming off a complete game victory six days prior, Lyman was just as brilliant by tossing eight shutout innings in a July 1, 7-0 victory against Upper Valley. The rising senior at Bridgeport University fanned a season-high nine batters and scattered three hits while issuing just one walk to lower his season ERA to 2.96 and his WHIP to 1.270. He now stands at 2-1 over five appearances (four starts) with 29 strikeouts, 11 walks and a .217 batting average against.
The NECBL congrats both players on their accomplishments.
