OMAHA, Neb. – Oklahoma State continued to hang empty frames at TD Ameritrade Park on Monday night, but had to wait two hours and 21 minutes before defeating Arizona 1-0. OSU pushed its scoreless innings streak to 19 overall and 18 in the College World Series after a weather delay to advance to Friday’s action.
Bobby Dalbec (10-5) recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts on the night for Arizona (45-22), but OSU’s Tyler Buffett (9- 3) bested the hard-throwing right hander with eight scoreless innings of work. Buffett picked up his ninth win of the season by scattering three hits while striking-out six.
The second time through the order was favorable for Oklahoma State (43-20) as Donnie Walton led off the inning with a double. Garrett Benge, who accounted for the lone run in Saturday’s opener against UC Santa Barbara, drove in Walton with a solid single into rightfield.
Buffett utilized his defensive to march through eight innings before turning things over to Trey Cobb who pitched a clean ninth. Defensively, Benge helped Cobb earn his fifth save of the season with a diving stop in the ninth to get a hustling Zach Gibbons for the second out of the frame. Gibbons’ chopper was fielded on a short-hop and fired across the diamond to a Dustin Williams. After a walk to Ryan Aguilar, Cobb got JJ Matijevic to ground-out to end the game.
As a program OSU has been a part of four 1-0 decisions in the College World Series history which is tied for the most all-time. The Cowboys are 3-1 overall in those match-ups. The Cowboys are the first team to start the College World Series with back-to-back 1-0 shutouts.
Arizona will play UC Santa Barbra in an elimination game on Wednesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oklahoma State will await the winner of that contest on Friday, June 24th.
