The second day of the NCAA Tournament was very interesting as it is usually with several upsets and teams not living up to expectations.
- The biggest upsets of the day was the Ole Miss Rebels blowing a one run ninth inning lead to Tulane who got a two run homer from Jake Rodgers to take the late lead. The victory by the Green Wave eliminated the Rebels from the Regional to send them out with an 0-2 record. This combined with a Boston College win over Utah sets up a Tulane and Utah game with the winner facing off against the Eagles in the Regional final.
- The other big storyline is Vanderbilt having a tough day going 0-2 with Xavier using a 13 run 7th inning to lead themselves to a 15-1 victory while Washington came back from a 8-2 deficit to defeat the Commodores 9-8 with the big hit coming from Washington center fielder and head coach Lindsey Meggs son Jack. The Huskies move on to face the loser of the Xavier and UC Santa Barbara game on Sunday.
- UNC-Wilmington picked up a wild 11-7 victory over Rhode Island to advance to the Regional Final where they will face the winner of South Carolina and Rhode Island. Wilmington has been right at the cusp of breaking through onto the real national stage for the past couple of seasons. We will see if they can make their first Super Regional appearance over the coming days.
- The East Carolina Pirates had Virginia on the ropes throughout their winner’s bracket matchup on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates though couldn’t find the big hit until the ninth inning when they exploded for five runs to erase a 6-3 ninth inning deficit to defeat the Cavaliers 8-6 on a Travis Watkins walk-off three run homer.

Ole Miss got exactly what they deserved after playing “When the Levee Breaks” over the loudspeakers before Tulane batted and one fan throwing a ball onto the field with the words “I drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was gone -Katrina ’06” written on the ball during batting practice. Ole Miss fans love to tell you how classy they are, but actions speak louder than words. I know people who were affected by Katrina, and they did NOT think that was cute. Ole Miss was complaining about how they were snubbed from being a National Seed when they were lucky to be hosting at all.
Maybe it was the kid’s walk-in music but there is no walk in music in the postseason.
You are talking about this song right?
That is correct! Yes, it was the Ole Miss player’s walk-in music and had been all season. I didn’t think they were supposed to be able to play their home field walk-in music either, but apparently they did right before the first pitch. Even if they were allowed to do so and they had been all season, you think they would have enough class or sense to realize that Tulane may take offense to it, whether it was intentional or not. Whoever was responsible for all of that probably has never experienced losing everything they own and having to relocate to another town and school because of a natural disaster.
