According to The Tennessean, Vanderbilt pitcher Donny Everett drowned in a Thursday accident.
Commodores’ Director of Athletics David Williams publicly acknowledged Everett’s passing Friday morning in a statement emailed to the press:
“We learned last night of the tragic death of Donny Everett, an outstanding young man who exemplified the best of our university. As you can imagine, the team, the athletic department and the university are trying to come to terms with this tragedy. His parents and loved ones are on our minds and in our prayers as we share in their grief.”
Vanderbilt has a NCAA Regional game scheduled against Xavier on Friday night at 7pm.
Everett was a right hander from Clarksville, TN. Prior to his time at Vanderbilt, he played for Clarksville High School and was the Gatorade Pitcher of the Year for Tennessee. According to his Vanderbilt player profile, 19 year old chose the Commordores because, “the family here is just something you cannot pass up. The life lessons that Coach Corbin can teach me, I will always remember. The education is great and will help my life after baseball and the memories I will make will be the best of my life.”
Our thoughts are with the Vanderbilt community at this time.
