With some teams’ decision not to play games on Easter Sunday, this week’s slate of games gave us some good game one matchups on Thursday:
Strike One: Dirtbags win in extras
(21) Long Beach State didn’t take their first lead until the top of 12th inning, but the Dirtbags still were able to hang to that lead in their 5-4 win over Cal State Fullerton. Long Beach State designated hitter Luke Rasmussen made his only hit of the night an important one with a two-run homer in the top of the 9th that tied the game. The Dirtbags got an excellent relief performance from Austin McGeorge, who struck out six of the eight batters he faced.
Long Beach State won the game when first baseman Garrett Nelson scored off a wild pitch thrown by Dylan Prohoroff.
Strike Two: Schmidt solid…again
Clark Schmidt turned in yet another solid game one performance for the Gamecocks, who took game one from (8) Ole Miss 5-1. Schmidt lasted almost seven innings and struck out eight Rebels, while only allowing one run. The victory improves Schmidt’s record to 6-0 this season, and the Gamecocks are now 4-0 in SEC play. Josh Reagan worked a five-out save to seal the victory and notched his seventh save of the season.
Strike Three: Ullom puts his fielders to work
Mitch Ullom lasted eight innings and improved his record to 3-1 this season, and (25) Houston shut out George Washington, 5-0. Ullom threw 81 pitches over his eight-inning performance and caused 18 put outs from George Washington hitters on ground balls. In his performance,
