MOREHEAD, Ky. – Contests against teams from Conference USA, along with the Atlantic Coast, Sun Belt, Southeastern, Big 10, Atlantic 10, Big East and Mid-American Conferences — plus 23 home games — highlight the 2016 Morehead State baseball schedule revealed this week.
The 2015 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament champion Eagles open the year with a three-game set at North Carolina Central (Feb. 19-21) before facing ACC power North Carolina State (Feb. 23), an NCAA Forth Worth Regional finalist last year. The Eagles will also return to Emerson, Ga., and the Perfect Game Complex for a trio of contests (vs. Arkansas State, Nebraska-Omaha and Saint Louis) in late February before starting their home slate against Siena (3 games — March 5-6).
“Nine games on the road to start the year will challenge us,” Head Coach Mike McGuire said. “I like the fact we play on the road against some of the top teams in the country on a yearly basis. The expectations for us as a program are to return to the NCAA Regionals again this year. We can’t get there without playing good competition. We are excited about the upcoming season and the schedule we have put together.”
The non-conference home schedule also features mid-week battles with Longwood (March 9), Miami (Ohio) (March 29), Marshall (March 30), West Virginia Tech (April 27) and Ohio (May 3).
On the road, the Eagles will face a non-conference challenge at Louisville (March 1), where MSU participated in its first NCAA Regional since 1983 last year. MSU also travels to Marshall (March 15), Kentucky (March 22), Tennessee (April 6), Xavier (3 games – April 8-10), Ohio State (2 games – April 12-13), Ohio (April 19), Miami (Ohio) (May 4) and 2015 College World Series runner-up Vanderbilt (May 17).
Morehead State will host five OVC three-game series and travel to the remaining five league teams. Home series include Tennessee Tech (March 11-13), Belmont (March 24-26), UT Martin (April 15-16), Austin Peay (April 29-May 1) and Jacksonville State (May 13-15). On the road in league play, MSU ventures to Southeast Missouri (March 18-20), Eastern Kentucky (April 1-3), SIU Edwardsville (April 22-24), Eastern Illinois (May 6-8) and Murray State (May 19-21).
The OVC Tournament, once again in Jackson, Tenn., is set for May 25-29. All dates, times and opponents are subject to change. Check MSUEagles.com, Twitter.com/MSUEagles and Facebook.com/MSUEagles for updates on the Eagle baseball program.
