Fordham baseball head coach Kevin Leighton announced the team’s 2016 schedule today. It features 23 home games, as well as non-conference weekend series in the Carolinas and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Except for 1944, the Fordham baseball program has played every year since 1859 and stands as the winningest program in NCAA history. The Rams will be competing for their eighth Atlantic 10 Championship tournament berth in the last 13 years, in hopes of being at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship, May 25-28, which will be hosted at Fordham’s Houlihan Park. It will be the third time that Fordham has hosted the conference championship (2006 & 2012).
The schedule features five NCAA teams from a year ago, which includes one that made it to the College World Series. Fordham kicks off the season in Greenville, South Carolina at Furman on Friday, February 19th, and then follows with neutral site games against Presbyterian and Michigan State on the 20th and 21st, respectively.
Fordham’s second series will take place in Wilson, North Carolina, where the Rams will play a four-game series against Canisius, February 26-28. Canisius was one of five teams on Fordham’s schedule to make the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
The Rams will then travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana for a three-game series against the LSU Tigers, March 4-5. It will be Fordham’s first-ever trip to LSU, who made the College World Series last season.
After three weekends on the road, the Rams will have their home opener on March 8th against crosstown rival Manhattan, which will be followed by home games against Villanova (Mar. 11), Saint Peter’s (Mar. 12), and NCAA participant Stony Brook (Mar. 13.
After a pair of road contests at NCAA participant Sacred Heart (Mar. 15) and Hofstra (Mar. 16), the Rams will have a pair of split series weekends. On March 19-20, Fordham takes on Wagner with the doubleheader at Wagner on March 19 and a single game at Houlihan Park on March 20. The following weekend, Fordham is at NJIT for a doubleheader on March 25th, while hosting the Highlanders for a doubleheader on March 26th.
Other non-conference road games for the Rams include trips to Rutgers (Apr. 6), Columbia (Apr. 20), and Manhattan (Apr. 26 in Fishkill, N.Y.), while having non-conference home games against Albany (Mar. 29), Iona (Apr. 12), Siena (Apr. 13), and Fairfield (Apr. 19).
