WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team has released the schedule for the upcoming 2016 season. Highlighting the slate is 20 home games at Shirley Povich Field as well as two road series against teams that reached their respective regional finals in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
The Hoyas will make three trips to the state of North Carolina in 2016. For the third-consecutive season, the Hoyas will begin the year at the Wake Forest Invitational, Feb. 19-21. Georgetown will open up against the host Demon Deacons on Friday and matchups against Virginia Military Institute (Saturday) and the University of Maryland-Baltimore Country (UMBC) (Sunday) will conclude the season-opening weekend.
The Blue & Gray will return to North Carolina the following weekend, Feb. 26-28, for a three-game series at Davidson University. Last season, the Hoyas dropped a pair of games to the Wildcats in a rain-shortened series. Georgetown will also play at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (UNCG) the weekend of March 24-26.
GU will play 12 midweek games throughout the season, including five home-and-home series. The Hoyas will host UMBC for their home opener on Wednesday, March 2 before returning to Baltimore later in the season on Tuesday, May 10. Georgetown will also play midweek contests against Yale University (March 15), George Washington University (March 22, April 20), the Naval Academy (April 5), George Mason University (March 29, April 12), Coppin State University (March 30, May 4) and the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (April 13, April 26).
Georgetown will embark on its annual trip to Florida for spring break, playing eight games in 10 days in the Sunshine State. The Hoyas will open the trip with a three-game series, March 4-6, at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Last season, the Owls won 42 games and advanced to the final of the Florida Regional as the No. 2 seed.
From Florida Atlantic, the Hoyas will return to Port Charlotte for the Snowbird Baseball Classic, where they will face former BIG EAST-opponent Pittsburgh (Tuesday, March 8) and Western Michigan (Wednesday, March 9). GU split two games with Western Michigan last season in Florida, coming from behind in the second matchup on an eighth-inning grand slam by Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge).
Following a day off, Georgetown will conclude its spring break trip with a three-game series versus the University of Pennsylvania. The games will be played at the spring training facility of the New York Mets in Port St. Lucie.
The Hoyas will play their lone non-conference home series of the season, March 17-20, when Princeton University visits Shirley Povich Field for a four-game series.
After its trip to UNCG, Georgetown will play its final non-conference series at William & Mary, April 1-3.
GU will open BIG EAST play on the weekend of April 8-10, playing a three-game set at St. John’s, the defending conference regular season and tournament champions.
The Hoyas will play three conference series at home at Shirley Povich Field, starting with Xavier, April 15-17. Seton Hall (April 29-May 1) and Villanova (May 13-15) will also visit Georgetown for three-game series. GU will play road weekends at Butler (April 22-24) and Creighton (May 6-8).
Georgetown and Villanova will be co-hosting the BIG EAST Championships at Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md., May 26-29. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will make the tournament.
The Hoyas are coming off of a memorable 2015 season that saw the team make the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1986. Additionally, Nick Collins was named Georgetown’s first-ever BIG EAST Player of the Year.
