Nebraska releases 2016 Schedule

DarinErstadSmallLincoln – Head Coach Darin Erstad released Nebraska’s 2016 baseball schedule on Monday morning. The 56-game schedule kicks off on Friday, Feb. 19, when the Huskers open a three-game series against the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C. Nebraska will play its first 10 games away from Lincoln before hosting its home opener on Tuesday, March 8, with an afternoon contest against Northern Colorado at Hawks Field.

Notes about the 2016 Schedule

  • 12 Games against 2015 NCAA Tournament Teams (could increase depending on matchups at the Tony Gwynn Classic)

  • 3 at College of Charleston (Feb. 19-21)

  • 3 vs. Illinois (April 1-3)
  • 3 at Michigan (April 15-17)
  • 3 vs. Indiana (May 19-21)

  • Nebraska’s 56-game schedule consists of 27 home games, 24 road games and 5 neutral site games

  • By month the Huskers are scheduled to play: February (7 games), March (17 games), April (20 games), May (11 games)

  • Nebraska will play eight Big Ten Conference series (4 home/4 road)

  • Home series: Illinois, Northwestern, Penn State, Indiana

  • Road series: Purdue, Michigan, Rutgers, Michigan State
  • NU opens league play at Purdue on Friday, March 25
  • NU’s Big Ten home opener is slated for Friday, April 1 against defending regular-season champion Illinois
  • NU’s trip to Rutgers on April 29 – May 1 will mark the first conference series between the teams

  • Nebraska’s Big Ten series at Michigan State will mark the second time the teams have met in East Lansing since NU joined the Big Ten. The teams have never played a series in Lincoln, but have met six times, with three of the meetings coming at the Big Ten Tournament.

  • Big Ten teams NU hasn’t hosted: Michigan State, Rutgers

  • Big Ten teams NU hasn’t played on the road: Penn State, Rutgers (scheduled to play in 2016)

  • For the first time since 2010, the Huskers won’t play a non-conference game against a team that played in the College World Series the previous season

  • 2015: NU swept Texas at Hawks Field a year after the Longhorns lost in the 2014 semifinals to eventual national champion Vanderbilt

  • 2014: NU split a pair of neutral site games with Oregon State after the Beavers were a win away from the 2013 CWS championship series
  • 2013: NU swept a doubleheader from Arkansas after the Razorbacks were a win away from the 2012 CWS championship series
  • 2012: NU and California split a four-game series in Lincoln. The Bears went 1-2 at the 2011 CWS.
  • 2011: NU took 2-of-3 from UCLA in Lincoln after the Bruins fell to South Carolina in the 2010 CWS championship series

  • Nebraska opens the season with a three-game series at College of Charleston on February 19. The teams have never met before

  • Nebraska will play in the inaugural Tony Gwynn Classic, an eight-team college tournament in San Diego during the second week of the season. The Huskers will play four games over three days. Games will be played at Fowler Park (San Diego Toreros) and Tony Gwynn Stadium (San Diego State Aztecs).

  • Nebraska opens the tournament against San Diego on Friday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m.

  • Nebraska and San Diego meet in a non-tournament game on Saturday morning at 11:30 a.m., then the Huskers will play either Arizona or Tulane later on Saturday.
  • Nebraska will play a team from the other bracket on Sunday, which includes Kentucky, UC Santa Barbara, Bryant and San Diego State

  • Nebraska and Kansas are set to play a midweek game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Wednesday, April 27

  • First time the Huskers and Jayhawks have played since April 8-10, 2011. KU took the three-game Big 12 series 2-1.

  • Fifth time since 2012 the Huskers will play at a MLB Stadium
    o 2015 – Minute Made Park (Houston Astros) for the Houston College Classic and Target Field (Minnesota Twins) for the Big Ten Tournament
    o 2014 – None
    o 2013 – Target Field (Minnesota Twins) for the Big Ten Tournament

  • NU took 2-of-3 on the road at Loyola Marymount last season. The Lions make a trip to Lincoln in March for a four-game series that includes a doubleheader on Saturday, March 12. The Huskers and Lions have never played in Lincoln. Last season’s meeting was the first since 1988.

  • Nebraska and Wichita State will play a three-game series at Hawks Field, March 18-20. The only other three-game series between the two teams took place in Wichita during the 1983 season.

  • The Huskers are scheduled to host Nicholls State April 22-24. It will be the first ever series between the teams, and the only previous meeting took place in 1999 at a tournament in Houston.

  • The Huskers end the season with seven-straight home games. The last time Nebraska hosted seven or more games to end a season was 2009 when NU played its final 11 games of the season at Hawks Field.
