OMAHA, Neb. – Dane Steinhagen led TCU with three RBI as the No. 7-seeded Horned Frogs eliminated LSU in an 8-4 victory at the 2015 Men’s College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
TCU (51-14) advances to a bracket two matchup against Vanderbilt on Friday at 7 p.m. The Frogs must win twice to reach the CWS Finals.
The No. 2-seeded Tigers end their season at 54-12.
What started as a back-and-forth game turned in TCU’s favor during a three-run fifth inning. After Cody Jones and Connor Wanhanen walked, Evan Skoug hit a double down the right field line for an RBI.
Steinhagen followed with another hit down the right field line that scored two.
The Horned Frogs added two more insurance runs in the seventh. Cody Jones drew his second walk, and Wanhanen reached on a fielder’s choice grounder. Skoug dribbled a ball to the infield which allowed Jones to score, and Steinhagen singled to center for his third RBI of the game.
The Tigers tried for a ninth-inning comeback on a pair of doubles by Chris Sciambra and Andrew Stevenson and a single by Mark Laird, but the rally fell short.
Trey Teakell (3-1) earned the win for the Frogs, throwing 4.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.
Steinhagen had three hits to go with his three RBI, and he came around to score once.
LSU used a CWS-record-tying eight pitchers, with the loss going to Austin Bain (2-3), who allowed three runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of relief.
LSU got on board in the top of the first. Jake Fraley walked on an 11-pitch at bat, then stole second, and Kade Scivicque drove him home with an RBI single through the right side.
The Frogs took a 3-1 lead in the second. Skoug and Steinhagen singled, and LSU starter Zac Person walked the next two batters to allow Skoug to come home. Garrett Crain singled through the right side to drive home Steinhagen and Odell to give the Frogs their first lead.
LSU tied it up in the third. Alex Bregman singled to the shortstop, and Fraley hit him home with an RBI triple to the gap in right center. Fraley came around to score on a wild pitch.
