College Baseball Daily has learned that current Nevada head coach Jay Johnson will be named the new head coach at the University of Arizona replacing Andy Lopez who retired this week. Johnson is coming off a 41-15 and 22-7 record in the Mountain West Conference this season with the Wolfpack but were left out of the NCAA Tournament.
Johnson has been the head coach of the Wolfpack for the last two seasons where he went 31-17 while going 15-15 in his first season.
Before taking the Nevada job, he spent the previous eight seasons as the associate head coach at the University of San Diego where the Toreros made six trips to NCAA postseason (2006-08, 2010, 2012-13) and captured four West Coast Conference titles in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2013.
In addition, Johnson spent time at Point Loma Nazarene leading the Sea Lions to a number six NAIA ranking and a 37-16 record in 2005. While an assistant at PLN in 2004, the team won a school record 47 games and finished third at the NAIA World Series.
