caputo_journalHello College Baseball Fans,

Consistency is the name of the game.

In a typical college baseball season, there are around 56 games over the course of four months. In the great game of baseball, where perfection is virtually impossible, the one defining characteristic of a good player, as well as a good team, is consistency. Highs and lows will come, but being consistent creates a standard to hold yourself to each and every day.

Easier said than done, being consistent means being mentally and physically focused on the task at hand, and dominating the aspects of the game that you can control.

This past week got off on the wrong note, as we suffered a five-inning loss to Qunnipiac University; the game called due to weather. However, one of the greatest things about baseball is that every day is a new day. And with each new day comes the ability to take advantage of another opportunity – which is exactly what we did. We came out strong against our in-state rivals, the Bryant Bulldogs, on Wednesday and posted 11 runs over their 6 to get the victory.

We kept the train rolling Friday, as our offense erupted with five runs in the bottom of the fifth, accentuated by sophomore Martin Tavares’ line drive home run over the right field fence. Junior Steve Moyers was battling on the hill, getting us through five and a third before the game was called due to fog. We’ve played in snow, sleet, and the pouring rain this season but The Beck finally met its match!

We picked up where we left off on Saturday, adding three more runs to top off the win, 11-5.

The rest of the day belonged to freshman Tyler Wilson. You can’t talk about consistency without mentioning “The Big Tuna”. Wilson tossed a complete game, allowing only six hits and one run. The southpaw now moves to 4-0 on the season.

We finished off the series on Sunday behind junior Lou Distasio, who went six strong innings allowing just one hit and one run. Key offensive efforts over the weekend were led by junior Mike Corin, who hit .500, with three doubles, a triple and 5 RBI.

The week that lies ahead will be a good challenge as we face New England rival Boston College Tuesday at 3pm and finish off the week in Richmond with the conference leading Spiders.

Until next time,

Tim Caputo
