MAC Weekend Recap (March 20th-22nd)

macAkron (10-10, 2-1) vs. Eastern Michigan (7-14, 1-2)

The Zips took 2-out-of-3 against Eastern Michigan to open up conference play. John Valek gave up 2 earned runs on 8 hits and a walk over 9 innings with 4 strikeouts. Dom Iero was 3-5 with a run and 3 RBI and Joey Havrilak was 3-4 with a run and an RBI. Eastern Michigan took the second game 3-1 as Charlie Land gave up 1 earned run on 7 hits and a walk over 7.1 innings with 3 strikeouts, and Mike Mioduszewski was 2-4 with a run and an RBI. In the loss Daulton Mosbarger was 4-4 with an RBI for Akron. In the series finale Akron won 3-1 as Jon Pusateri tossed 6 innings without giving up an earned run with 7 strikeouts. Mason Mamarella was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and Mitchell McGeein was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.

Ball State (15-7, 3-0) vs. Bowling Green State (5-12, 0-3)

The Cardinals had a big weekend sweeping BGSU in their opening weekend in MAC play. They won the first game 7-0 as Zach Plesac tossed a complete game, 3 hit shutout with 8 strikeouts. Elbert Devarie was 4-5 at the plate with a run and 2 RBI. Alex Call had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, and Colin Brockhouse was 2-5 with 2 RBI. They won the second game 6-1 as Scott Baker also tossed a complete game giving up 1 ER on 4 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. Scott Tyler was 2-3 with a home run and 4 RBI, while Brockhouse was 2-4 with 2 RBI. Ball State completed the sweep with a 5-2 victory. Brockhouse finished off his excellent weekend going 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI.

Buffalo (4-12, 1-2) vs. Northern Illinois (11, 2-1)

The Huskies took 2-out-of-3 from Buffalo over the weekend. They won the first game 3-1 as Ben Neumann tossed 7 innings without giving up an earned run and only issuing 1 hit and 2 walks with 8 strikeouts. Brian Sisler was 2-5 with 2 runs scored at the plate for NIU. The Huskies took game two 3-2 with Dirk Orsmby going 8 innings and allowing just 1 earned run on 6 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. Buffalo won the third game 5-1 as Mike McGee and Ben Hartz combined for 9 innings pitched, 4 hits, 5 walks (all by McGee), 0 earned runs and 14 strikeouts. Bobby Shepphard was 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI.

Central Michigan (15-9, 2-1) vs. Ohio (12-8, 1-2)

Ohio won the first game of the weekend 6-4, but Central Michigan came back to win the next two games and the series. In game two CMU won 9-3 as Logan Regnier was 3-3 with 2 runs and 3 RBI and Tyler Huntey was 2-3 with a home run, 3 runs and an RBI. They won the third game 4-0 as Jason Gamble tossed a complete game shutout, while giving up just 7 hits and a walk. Huntey was 2-4 with a run and an RBI at the plate in this one.

Kent State (9-9, 1-2) vs. Toledo (8-15, 2-1)

The Rockets took the first two games of the series 4-1 and 4-3, respectively. In the first game Cameron Palmer stuck out nine over 6 innings, while giving up 1 earned run on 4 hits and 4 walks. A.J. Montoya hit a solo home run and Josh Cales was 2-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. In the loss for Kent State Nick Jensen-Clagg went 6.1 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits and a walk with 9 strikeouts. In game two Steven Calhoun went 7 innings without giving up an earned run on 4 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts. The Golden Flashes got out of the weekend with a 1-0 win in game three thanks to Andy Ravel tossing 7 scoreless innings.

Miami (4-15, 2-1) vs. Western Michigan (8-11, 1-2)

The RedHawks took the first two games of the weekend winning 8-5 in the first game and the second game 3-2 in 11 innings. Ryan Powers gave up 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 3 walks over 6.1 innings for Miami in game one with 5 strikeouts. Matt Honchel was 3-5 with 2 RBI and Max Andresen drove in three runs. In the loss for WMU Jared Kujawa was 2-4 with a home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Jacob Banks went 7 innings in game two giving up 2 earned runs on 7 hits and a walk with 6 strikeouts, while WMU’s Derek Schneider went 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits and a walk with 6 strikeouts. The Broncos broke through in the third game winning 9-5. Hunter Prince was 2-5 with a run and 3 RBI and Kurt Hoekstra was 2-3 with a run and 2 RBI. In the loss for Miami Andresen was 2-4 with 2 RBI.
