MAC Baseball Weekend Recap (Feb. 20th-22nd)

macAkron (4-2):
The Zips took two-out-of-three in what was supposed to be a four game series that was cut short because of weather. They won the first game 2-1 thanks to a 2-4, 2 RBI performance by Dom Iero. John Valek III gave up 1 ER over 7 innings, while striking out six. They fell 1-0 in the second game, which was cut short to just seven innings. J.T. Brubaker gave up 1 run over 6 innings, allowing just 4 hits. They won game three 5-4. Daulton Mosbarger was 1-3 with 2 runs scored, while Iero collected two more RBI.

Ball State (4-2):
The Cardinals had a big weekend winning all four games. They won the first game against High Point 3-1. Scott Baker went 7.2 innings, giving up 1 ER on 6 hits and 2 walks with 5 strikeouts. Alex Call was 2-4 with a home run, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. They won the second game against High Point 6-3. Caleb Stayton was 2-4 with a home run and 4 RBI, while Call was 2-3 with 2 runs scored. Ball State won the first game against Elon 18-8. Elbert Devarie was 3-5 with a home, 4 runs and 2 RBI. Call was 1-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBI, and Jarett Rindfleisch was 2-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI. The Cardinals completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Elon. Stayton was 3-4 with 2 runs, while Matt Eppers was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI. Call was 6-16 with 1 home run, 6 runs and 5 RBI on the weekend, while Stayton was 6-14 with 1 home run, 4 runs and 4 RBI.

Bowling Green State (1-2):
BGSU had all three of their games against Morehead St. cancelled over the weekend.

Buffalo (0-3):
The Bulls were scheduled to play two games against Maryland Eastern Shore and two against VMI, but due to weather conditions all of those games were cancelled.

Central Michigan (5-3):
CMU split a four-game series with Stetson over the weekend. They won the first game 6-5 with Tyler Huntey going 2-6 with 2 RBI and Nick Deeg giving a solid performance on the mound giving up 1 ER in 6 innings, while striking out six. They won game two 8-6. Nick Regnier was 4-6 with 1 RBI, and Logan Regnier was 2-3 with 2 runs scored. They dropped game three 13-6 despite a 3-3 performance from Pat MacKenzie where he drove in two and scored a run. Game four was a tough, ninth inning 6-5 loss. Daniel Jipping was 2-3 with a run and an RBI.

Eastern Michigan (2-5):
EMU got their first win of the season on Friday night with a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s. Ryan Lavoie tossed seven scoreless innings, only giving up 4 hits in the process. Mitchell McGeein was 2-4 with a solo home run. John Montgomery was 2-3 and hit the go-ahead home run. On Saturday they were swept in the double-header losing 2-1 in seven innings and then 6-1. In the 2-1 loss McGeein hit his second home run of the weekend, and then in the 6-1 loss he went 2-4 with a run scored. They finished the weekend on a good note with a 5-1 win. Jake Andrews tossed a complete game giving up 1 ER on 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out five. John Rubino was 3-4 with 2 runs scored. Jordan Peterson also had three hits to go along with an RBI, and McGeein was 1-4 with 2 RBI. On the weekend McGeein was 6-15 with 2 home runs.

Kent State (2-4):
The Golden Flashes of Kent State dropped two-of-three to #21 Baylor over the weekend. They started out hot winning game one 11-3. Zach Beckner went 4-5 with 2 runs and an RBI, and Sawyer Polen was 2-3 with 3 walks, 2 runs and 1 RBI. They dropped game two 6-1 even though Zarley Zalewski was 3-5 and Polen was 3-4. Kent State suffered a 4-3 loss to finish the weekend. Over the three-game series Polen went 6-9 with 5 walks and 3 runs scored.

Miami (1-4):
The RedHawks started off the weekend with a 9-0 victory over USC Upstate. Ryan Powers tossed six scoreless innings without giving up a hit. He walked three and struck out eight. Matt Honchel led the offense going 4-5 with three runs scored. Scott Slappey was 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Miami dropped their next game of the weekend to UNC-Asheville 5-3. Chad Sedio went 2-4 with a run scored. They finished the weekend with a 7-4 loss to Wofford. Honchel had another good game going 3-4 with a run and an RBI. He finished the weekend going 8-13 at the plate with four runs scored.

Northern Illinois (3-4):
The Huskies faced a difficult task taking on #5 Texas Tech this past weekend, and the blow was delivered harshly. They were shutout in three of the four games – 8-0, 5-0 and 6-0 – and lost another game 6-4. Brian Sisler was one of few NIU players that had any success on the weekend. In the last three games of the series he was 7-12 with 2 RBI.

Ohio (6-0):
The Bobcats remain perfect on the season after a sweep of Longwood. They won game one 6-4. Manny DeJesus was 2-4 with 2 runs and an RBI, while Logan Cozart was perfect out of the pen striking out three over 2.2 innings. They won the second game 13-2. Mitch Longo led the way on offense with a 3-run home run. He added two more hits and two runs in the game. DeJesus was 3-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Ohio completed the sweep with a7-6 win. Jake Madsen was 4-4 with a run and an RBI. DeJesus was 1-4 with a run and Tyler Wells was 3-3 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI. DeJesus finished the weekend going 6-12 with 5 runs and 3 RBI.

Toledo (2-4):
The Rockets started off the weekend on a good note getting their first win of the season 3-0 over Winthrop. A.J. Montoya was 2-4 with an RBI. On the mound Cameron Palmer tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, striking out seven in the process. They split a double-header on Saturday losing the first game 11-3 before winning game three and the series with a 4-3 victory. In the loss Matt Hansen was 3-4 with a run and an RBI. In the night cap Montoya was 4-5 with 2 runs scored, while Caleb Schillace gave up 2 this and walked 4 over six scoreless innings.

Western Michigan (3-3):
Western Michigan had quite the successful weekend, sweeping UT Martin and outscoring them 27-11 in the process. They won game one 6-4. Kurt Hoekstra was 3-4 with a run scored, while Nick Vogeimeier was 3-5 with 2 runs scored. Keegan Akin had another solid outing on the mound striking out 10 batters over 6 innings, while only allowing 1 ER on 5 hits and 2 walks. They won the second game 11-7. Hoekstra and Vogelmeier led the way on offense again. Hoekstra was 4-5 with a run and 4 RBI, while Vogeimeier was 3-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. The Broncos completed the sweep with a 10-0 victory. Grant Miller was 3-3 with a run and 4 RBI. On the weekend Hoekstra was 9-14 with 5 runs and 4 RBI.
