In Wednesday’s edition of Around the Horn we recap a day of upsets in college baseball and show some love to some mid major’s along the way.

Nicholls State went into Baton Rouge and shocked the Tigers after they beat the no. 5 ranked team in the country six to three improving their record to 3-1. Nicholls State received a solid pitching performance from starting pitcher Ryan Deemes as he recorded six strikeouts allowing only one walk and seven hits in 4.0 scoreless innings. Alex Ernestine received the win (1-0) as he threw 1.0 scoreless inning and fanned one. The Nicholls State offense was led by Seth Stevens who was 2-5 on the day with a pair of extra base hits to go along with his 2 RBI. Sealing the win for Nicholls State was Stuart Holmes as he struck out one in 1.2 innings of work to record his second save of the year.

Nicholls State is back in action on Friday as they travel to Pensacola, Florida to take on the North Florida Ospreys at 11 AM. LSU will play a three game series with out of conference opponent Boston College February 20, 21 and 22.

No. 22 Florida International found themselves on the losing end of a 12-2 blowout to Stetson University on Wednesday night. After a series that saw the Hatters muster up 9 hits in three games over the weekend, Stetson figured out how to swing the bats and exploded for 12 runs in Wednesdays win against the Panthers. The offense was supplied by the bats of Cory Reid and Josh Powers as the two smacked three doubles apiece and collected knocked in five of the Hatters 12 runs. A superior outing from starting pitcher Adam Schaly notched him the win as he let up two earned runs, five hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings pitched.

Jacksonville defeated no. 16 Florida State 5-3 in a barn burner at John Sessions Stadium. The Dolphins (2-2) had six hits and 15 strikeouts in the win, while the Seminoles (3-1) rally in the ninth inning was ended by sophomore Nathan Disch when he struck out the would be game tying batter with a runner on second base.

Jeff Tanner (1-0) receives the first win of his career in an eight-strikeout performance that lasted 5.0 innings.

Florida Atlantic (4-0) defeated the no. 9 ranked Miami Hurricanes 5-3 on Wednesday at FAU Baseball Stadium. Starting pitcher Brandon Rhodes provided FAU with 6.0 scoreless innings where he only allowed 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 4. Stephen Kerr, Brett Lashley, Ricky Santiago and CJ Chatham each provided two hits apiece for the Owl offense and combined for 8 of the teams 11 hits. Brandon Sanger and Ricky Santiago were a good 3, 4 punch as each recorded an RBI in the victory.

FAU will host Ohio State for a three game series this weekend (2/20, 2/21, 2/22) before heading to Jupiter on the 24th to face the no. 2 ranked Florida Gators.
