Akron started off the year with a 7-5 win over Furman. Daulton Mosbarger was 2-4 with 3 RBI. They dropped the second game to Furman 8-7 in 10 innings. Dom Iero went 4-6 at the plate with 2 runs and 3 RBI. They bounced-back to finish off the weekend with a strong 11-3 win. Kris Simonton got it going with three hits, 2 runs and 2 RBI. Pat Dyer turned out a solid pitching performance as well going 6 innings and striking out six, while only allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.
Ball State (0-2)
The Cardinals lost 11-7 on Friday to Kentucky and then 4-2 on Saturday to UNC-Wilmington. In the Kentucky game Alex Call was 2-5 with a run and 2 RBI. He went 2-4 again in the UNC-Wilmington game, this time with just a run scored. B.J. Butler pitched well in that game striking out six over 4.1 innings.
Bowling Green State (1-2)
BGSU got off to a good start to the season winning their first game against Southeast Missouri State 7-6. In the win Randy Righter was 2-4 with a home run and 4 RBI. Greg Basalyga had three hits and scored a run. Game two was also decided by a run, but the Falcons were on the wrong end of this one losing 6-5. Kory Brown scored three times in this one. Bowling Green dropped the final game of the series 5-1. Righter hit a solo shot for his second home run of the early season.
Buffalo (0-3)
The Bulls dropped all three games over the weekend falling to James Madison 5-4 on Friday night and then to Gardner-Webb in the next two games 7-1 and 6-3 respectively. Nick Sinay had a big weekend for Buffalo racking up five hits in the three games combined.
Central Michigan (3-1)
Central Michigan started the season with a four game set against Florida Gulf Coast University. They took game one 2-0 thanks to Nick Deeg who went 6 innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk. Alex Borglin had two hits. They lost game one of the double-header on Saturday 6-4. Pat MacKenzie was 2-4 with 2 runs scored. They came back in the second game to win 7-6 in 12 innings. Tim Black was solid in relief going 3 innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out four. Nick Regnier and Borglin both had three hits in this one. In the final game the Chippewas won 5-2 with Pat Leatherman going 6 innings, allowing just 1 earned run on 3 hits and two walks with 4 strikeouts. Logan Regnier was 2-4 with a run and an RBI.
Eastern Michigan (0-3)
Eastern Michigan started out the season with a difficult task going on the road to face Arizona, and it proved too much as they were swept in the three-game series. The lost 7-3 on Friday, 16-3 on Saturday and 6-2 on Sunday. In game one John Rubino was 1-3 with a run and an RBI. In the second game Jordan Peterson was 2-4 with a run scored. Rubino racked up two more hits in game three of the series and added another run. Jake Andrews went 5.2 innings without allowing an earned run, and he also struck out four.
Kent State (1-2)
Kent State got off to a bad start losing game one to Winthrop 9-1 thanks to six unearned runs. Zarley Zalewski had two hits in this one. They then lost the first game of a double-header on Saturday 2-1. Ravel tossed six innings allowing just 1 earned run on two hits and two walks. Sawyer Polen was 2-3 at the plate. The Golden Flashes finally broke through with a win in game three 9-5. Jared Skolnicki pitched five scoreless innings, striking out seven in the process. Jacob Neuschaefer was 4-4 at the plate with 2 runs and 3 RBI.
Miami (0-2)
The RedHawks started off the season with a tough 3-1 loss to Cincinnati. In the loss Matt Honchel had two hits, while Kendall Johnson went 3-3 at the plate with an RBI and a walk. In game two of the opening weekend series, Miami fell to Mississippi State 7-1. Scott Slappey had a two-hit game in this one.
Northern Illinois (3-0)
The Huskies beat South Dakota State twice and Niagara once to start the season 3-0. In game one against South Dakota State they won 10-6 thanks in part to Stephen Letz who was 3-5 in his NIU debut with a run and an RBI. In game two they beat Niagara 15-5 with Brian Sisler going 5-5 with 6 RBI, 3 runs and 3 doubles. The Huskies then turned around to play South Dakota State again and won 9-6. Nate Ruzich led the way in this one going 2-4 with 2 runs, 3 RBI and a home run. Sisler finished the weekend going 8-14 with 4 runs and 7 RBI.
Ohio (3-0)*
The Bobcats racked up 10 or more runs in all three games during their weekend sweep over UNC-Asheville. In game one, which they won 16-9, Mitch Longo was 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI to go along with 2 runs scored. In the second game – a 10-3 win – Cody Gaertner was 3-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. They also won the third game 10-3. In relief, Logan Cozart struck out eight batters in three innings. Gaertner was 3-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI in game three finishing the weekend with eight hits, 6 runs, 6 RBI and 1 home run.
Toledo (0-3)
The Rockets dropped two games to Wright State and another to Belmont over the weekend. They lost the first game to Wright State 8-1. Cameron Palmer struck out eight over 5 innings in that one, while Ryan Callahan hit a solo homer. They lost the second game to Wright State 7-4 with Steven Calhoun striking out seven over 6.2 innings. Callahan was 3-4 in that one with another solo home run. Belmont racked up 18 runs in their victory over Toledo. In the loss for the Rockets, Callahan went 2-4, while A.J. Montoya was 2-3 with a run and 2 RBI. Callahan finished the weekend 6-12 at the plate with two home runs.
Western Michigan (0-3)
The Broncos had a difficult weekend losing a couple of close games to UAB. Friday night they fell 4-1 despite a good start from Keegan Akin who tossed 6 inning, only allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out nine. In the first game on Saturday they lost 7-2. Brett Sunde was 2-4 with an RBI. The final game of the series was a heartbreaker losing 2-1. Kurt Hoekstra was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored.
