Florida International (2-1):
The Panthers took on Tennessee during college baseball’s opening weekend and they stood up to the tall task winning two-of-three. On Friday they beat the Volunteers 4-3 thanks to a 2 RBI game by Josh Anderson. Jack Schaaf helped out as well scoring two runs. Their lone loss came on Saturday, 9-2. Anderson was 2-4 with a solo home run in this one, while Mitchell Robinson was 3-4 with a run scored. FIU blanked Tennessee 3-0 in the rubber match. Starting pitcher Christopher Mourelle went 5 innings allowing just 1 hit and 2 walks. Brian Portelli was 2-3 with a run scored.
Florida Atlantic (3-0):
FAU won game one against UCONN 16-5. Stephen Kerr was 3-5 with 2 RBI and scored 4 runs. Esteban Puerta was 4-4 with 2 RBI and 2 runs. Kyle Miller pitched 6 innings, only allowing 1 hit, while striking out 10. Game two was a bit more difficult, but the Owls won 2-1 in 11 innings with a walkoff home run by Christian Dicks. Drew Jackson went 6.1 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out nine. FAU completed the sweep with another walkoff. The Owls scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, the second coming on a walkoff single by Ricky Santiago. Brett Lashley was 2-2 with 2 RBI in this one.
Louisiana Tech (0-3):
La. Tech had a rough go of it this past week losing all three games against Southeastern Louisiana. Game one was a 5-4 loss. Phil Maton tossed 5 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out seven. Taylor Love was 1-1 with 1 run, 2 RBI and 2 walks. They lost the second game 6-1. Mark Baughman struck out six and only gave up 3 hits in 4.2 innings. Jacob Derouen and Bre’shon Kimbell both went 2-4. The third game was a 7-1 loss, with Chandler Hall going 2-4 with 1 RBI.
Marshall (2-1):
The Thundering Herd lost the season opener 4-3. Sergio Leon was 2-3 with a run scored. The bats broke out in game two of the series pilling up 24 runs in a 24-2 victory. Leon was 4-4 with 1 run and 3 RBI. Corey Bird was 4-6 with 3 runs, and 5 RBI. Andrew Dundon went 4-6 with 2 run and 2 RBI. On the mound Chase Boster pitched five innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out seven. Marshall eked out the series win with a 10-9 victory on Sunday. Bird was 2-4 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. DJ Gee was 3-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI.
Middle Tennessee State (2-1):
MTSU started out the season with a 7-2 win over Jacksonville. Michael Adkins was 3-4 with a home run, two doubles, 4 RBI and 2 runs. Jarred Allen was 2-5 with 3 runs scored. They won again on Saturday, this time 8-5 as Adkins homered again to go along with 4 RBI, 2 runs and two hits. Austin Bryant was 2-4 with 2 runs scored, and Kooper Kessler struck out eight over 5.2 innings. MTSU failed to complete the sweep losing 11-2 on Sunday. Adkins had another good day going 2-4 with 2 RBI. He finished the weekend going 7-13 with 2 home runs and 10 RBI.
Old Dominion (0-3):
The Monarchs had a difficult weekend losing all three contests. On Friday they were shutout by Coastal Carolina 4-0, despite a 2-4 performance by Josh Eldridge. They lost 5-2 to Maryland on Saturday with Eldridge having another good game going 3-4 with a solo home run. In game three they lost to Canisius 8-7, while Taylor Ostrich went 2-4 with 2 RBI.
Rice (2-2):
Rice split the four-game series against Texas over the weekend, with all four games being close. They lost on Friday 3-1. Kevin McCanna tossed five innings, giving up just 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out eight. Leon Byrd was 1-2 with an RBI. Rice won both games on Saturday, 10-9 and 5-2 respectively. During the first game on Saturday Ford Stainback was 4-5 with a run and 2 RBI, while Ryan Chandler was 2-4 with 2 runs and 1 RBI. In game three of the series Ricardo Salinas lasted 7.1 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 5 hits and 2 walks. Stainback continued his hitting ways going 2-4 with a run and an RBI. Kirby Taylor was 3-4 with 3 RBI. In the finale on Sunday, Texas came back to win 4-3 in 10 innings. Austin Orewiler struck out 10 batters over 6.2 innings, while Leon Byrd was 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBI.
Southern Miss (3-0):
Christian Talley got things started for the Golden Eagles on Friday night during the 7-4 win over Murray State tossing 6 innings, giving up just 1 earned run on 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 11. Dylan Burdeaux was 3-4 with 1 home run, 2 runs and 2 RBI. They won 10-3 on Saturday thanks to another big day by Burdeaux who went 3-5 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Connor Barron was 4-5 with a home run and 4 runs scored. They completed the sweep with a 6-5 win on Sunday. Burdeaux capped off his big weekend going 3-4 with 2 runs scored. All together Burdeaux was 9-13 with 1 home run, 3 RBI and 6 runs scored.
UAB (3-0):
The Blazers starting pitching was dominate over the weekend, leading to a three-game sweep over Western Michigan. Alex Luna tossed 7.1 scoreless innings on Friday, giving up just three hits and striking out six. Nathan Vincent was 2-4 with a run scored. Jeff Schalk drove in two during game one of the series. James Naile went 8 innings, giving up just three hits, while striking out six. Brett Blackwood was 2-4 in his Blazer debut, hitting a home run in his very first at-bat. He would finish the game with 4 RBI. Vincent was 2-5 in this one with an RBI. UAB held on for a 2-1 victory to complete the sweep. Johnny Lieske pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up 4 hits and allowing 1 walk, while striking out seven. Vincent was 2-4 in this one with 2 more RBI. On the weekend the Blazers’ starting pitching staff tossed 23.2 innings without giving up an earned run, giving up 10 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 19.
UTSA (2-1):
The RoadRunners got out to a good start with an 8-5 win over UL-Lafayette on Friday night. John Bormann was 3-4 with a home run and 4 RBI. They dropped the second game of the series 8-2 despite another home run from Bormann and a 3-4 game from Kevin Markham. UTSA bounced back on Sunday with an 11-5 win. Tyler Straub was 2-3 with 2 runs and 2 RBI. Markham hit a home run and scored 4 runs total. Matt Hilston was 2-4 with a home run as well.
Western Kentucky (1-1):
The Hilltoppers lost to Maryland 7-3 on Friday. Ryan Church had a double and 2 RBI. Phillip Diedrick was 1-4 with an RBI. They came back on Saturday to beat Coastal Carolina 9-4. Danny Hudzina, Cody Wofford and Diedrick all had home runs.
