We wrap up the opening weekend of play with several key matchups on Sunday afternoon throughout the country. Here are some of the highlights.
The Cal-State Fullerton Titans started the season off 0-2 with losses to South Florida and Alabama State. The Titans bounced back on Sunday with a win over the Louisville Cardinals behind Chris Hudgins who went 1-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Oklahoma State was able to salvage the third game of their series against Arizona State with a 9-8 victory. It was the Cowboys first victory of the season as Koda Glover picked up the save working a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout.
Florida International grabbed the rubber game against Tennessee on Sunday by a score of 3-0. FIU starting pitcher Christopher Mourelle went the first five innings allowing only one hit and walking two to pick up the win.
UNLV’s Payton Squier picked up a double and drove in two runs in the afternoon 3-0 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers to clinch the 3 game series. Starting pitcher DJ Myers had a strong game going 7.1 innings while allowing three hits and a walk including five strikeouts to get the win.
Baylor completed the weekend sweep of Cal Poly 6-0 on Sunday behind starting pitcher Theron Kay who went four shutout innings allowing five hits to grab the victory.
Cal State Northridge picked up a 5-1 victory over Gonzaga to start the season with a perfect 4-0 record. CSUN starter Angel Rodriguez (1-0) went the distance by allowing one run on five hits while striking out five batters. “Even though he wasn’t sharp early, you could see him build on every pitch he threw,” said Head Coach Greg Moore about Rodriguez’s start. “He did an outstanding job today. It was a very efficient and outstanding outing from Angel. You can’t ask for anything more.” The win matches the start of the 2002 CSUN team that went on to win the Big West Championship.
