The ACC went 10-4 on opening day against non conference opponents. (Duke is still in progress and Notre Dame played a double-header) All of the top 25 nationally ranked teams in the ACC secured victories, the only team ranked in the top 30 to lose in the ACC was Clemson (27).
Seton Hall at (14) North Carolina
North Carolina’s Wood Meyers and Skye Bolt each had two hits and an RBI in route to a 7-1 victory over Seton Hall. Spencer Trayner (1-0, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K) picks up the win after relieving starting pitcher, Matt Thornton (4.1 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 K).

SIUE at Notre Dame
Notre Dame’s P. Solomon picked up the win after striking out three batters and giving up zero runs in 2.2 innings pitched. The Notre Dame offense was supplied in a go ahead homer by R. Lidge (1-1, 1 HR, 2 RBI) in the bottom of the 7th inning.

(10) Louisville vs. Alabama State
Kyle Funkhouser earned his first win of the year in an impressive outing where he threw 7.1 innings, gave up zero runs, one hit and recorded 12 strikeouts in a 5-1 victory over Alabama State. Sutton Whiting, Corey Ray, Danny Rosenbaum and Logan Taylor paced the Cardinals offense with two hits a piece while Nick Solak knocked in a team high 2 RBIs.

(2) Virginia at East Carolina
The no. 2 Virginia Cavaliers received stellar pitching from the always trustworthy Nathan Kirby. Kirby earned his first win of the year while throwing 7 innings and recording 5 strikeouts while giving up 0 runs. Recording the first save of the year for the Cavs was Closer, Josh Sborz. Pacing the Cavalier offense was Kenny Towns who recorded 3 hits and crossed the plate once. Ernie Clement and Robbie Coman each contributed to the Cavs offense with two hits of their own.

Pittsburgh vs. St. Louis
Sophomore T.J. Zeuch recorded his first win of the year in an 18-1 romping of St. Louis. Senior Jordan Frabasilio led the Panthers with three hits, going 3-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored. Junior Ron Sherman was 2-4 with a triple, four RBIs, and two runs scored. Sophomores Caleb Parry and Manny Pazos were both 2-2 with one RBI and one run.

Villanova at N.C. State
Senior Logan Ratledge and Ryne Willard paced the N.C. State Wolfpack with 2 hits and 2 runs each while Ratledge added on an RBI in the 14-5 win over Villanova. Getting the win for the Wolfpack is starter Corey Wilder. Wilder went 5.0 innings while striking out 5 and giving up 0 runs and walking 3.

Oakland at (16) Florida State
D.J. Stewart paced the Seminole offense with a 3-3 day at the plate and Josh Delph contributed to the attack with a home run and 4 RBIs. Bryant Holtmann received the win after relieving starting pitcher, Mike Compton who threw 81 pitches through 6.0 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts and 0 runs allowed.

St. Johns (NY) at Georgia Tech
Senior first baseman Thomas Smith was Georgia Tech’s offensive catalyst in todays 17-3 routing of St. Johns. Going 3-4 with 4 runs scored and an RBI he was the dominant factor that sparked the Yellow Jackets offense. Sophomore Justus Connor and freshman Wade Bailey also contributed to the offensive explosion with two hits each and a RBI. Jonathan King was the winning pitcher in today’s contest where he recorded 3 strikeouts and allowed 2 earned runs in 5.0 innings of work.

Virginia Tech vs. Mercer
Kyle Lewis and Charlie Madden paced the Mercer offense with a combined 5 hits and 2 RBIs in way to a 9-1 victory over Virginia Tech. Third Baseman Danny Edgeworth recorded 3 RBIs and right fielder Trey Tuitt also got in on the action as he went 2-3 with 2 runs scored a home run and 2 RBIs. The winning pitcher was Ryan Askew who went 5.2 innings and recorded 4 strikeouts and gave up only 1 run.

West Virginia at (27) Clemson
Third Baseman Justin Fox had a 3-3 day at the plate in route to a 2-0 upset over Clemson. BJ Myers was the starting pitcher and went 5.0 innings giving up 0 runs and 4 hits before being relieved by Blake Smith. After coming in the 6th inning Smith threw 4 scoreless innings and recorded 5 strikeouts to receive the win.

Notre Dame at Oklahoma
Jake Elliot went 7 strong innings and didn’t give up a single run and only allowed 2 hits. The sophomore from Coppell, Texas recorded 4 strikeouts and walked two Notre Dame batters before handing the ball off to LHP Jacob Evans. The junior southpaw allowed 1 run and struck out 4 in 2.0 innings of work. Providing the offense for the Sooners was Alex Wise who recorded 3 hits and 2 runs while Craig Aiken drove in 2 of the Sooners 6 runs. Also collecting a pair of hits were Anthony Hermelyn and Taylor Alspaugh.

Delaware at Wake Forest
Stuart Fairchild stepped up for the Demon Deacons and recorded 2 hits to pace the offense while Ben Breazeale and Yurchak each had an RBI tallied next to their names. Matt Pirro recorded the win while giving up 1 hit and 0 runs in 5.0 innings of work.

Wofford vs. Boston College
Plaited and Waln both posted 2 hits each to help pace the Wofford offense. Aside from some timely hitting and good situational hitting Wofford starter Matthew Milburn dominated on the mound recording 8 strikeouts in route to a 8-4 win over the Boston College Eagles.

Rutgers at (13) Miami
The no. 13 Miami Hurricanes defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 5-2 behind a strong performance from the Miami bullpen. Starting pitcher Andrew Suarez gave up 2 runs in 5.0 innings of worked before Coach Morris removed him from the game and entrusted his bullpen. A combined effort from Beauprez, Mediavilla, Hammond and Garcia resulted in 0 runs and 2 hits in 4 innings. Sophomore closer Bryan Garcia came on to close out the game for the Hurricanes in the bottom of the 9th after the offense busted out a three run 8th inning. Leading the Canes offense was a sophomore and junior combination in Willie Abreu and Ricky Eusebio. Abreu and Eusebio combined for 4 hits and 2 runs to lead the Miami offense. Perhaps the player of the game though, was 8th inning hero Johnny Ruiz, with his go ahead 2 RBI single to center field to put the Canes ahead and ultimately win the ball game.
